Title: Call for participants: One Health Ally Course 2025 Information session ★ November 12th 16:00-16:30 Japanese / 16:30-17:00 ENGLISH
One Health Ally Course is an inter-graduate school and inter-university special educational program to provide the essence of One Health for students in both humanities and sciences.

~Research and Development of Japanese Vaccines~
 The Institute for Vaccine Research and Development (IVReD), Hokkaido University (HU) was established in October 2022 as a synergy center under the Program, entitled, “Japan Initiative for World-leading Vaccine Research and Development Centers” by Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED).
 Among the activities performed by members of the IVReD, Professor Yoshihiro Sakoda and his research group at the Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine, isolated a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus strain (HPAIV) (H5N1 subtype) in 2022 for the first time in Japan from a dead red fox (Virology, 2023). This HPAIV strain was sent to Dr. Hideki Hasegawa, who is the Director of the Center for Influenza and Respiratory Virus Research at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), representative of WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza in Japan, and an IVReD visiting professor. The genome, pathogenicity, and antigenicity of the HPAIV strain (Ezo Red Fox strain) were examined at the Center for Influenza and Respiratory Virus Research, NIID, and the vaccine strain (NIID-002) was synthesized from the parental Ezo Red Fox strain. In February 2024, the NIID-002 strain was approved as candidate vaccine virus (CVV) for H5N1 at the WHO Vaccine Composition Meeting (VCM). In addition, the NIID-002 was selected as Influenza pre-pandemic vaccine strain by the Health Sciences Council of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and stockpiling production of the NIID-002 is currently underway by pharmaceutical companies in Japan.

~Social problems of hepatitis E virus~
 Hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotypes 3 and 4 are of concern as zoonotic diseases. These HEVs show no clinical signs in animals, but shed the virus and contaminate the environment. HEV can also be found in the liver of adult pigs without any abnormal findings. HEV has been detected in a variety of domestic and wild animals worldwide.
 HEV infection in humans is primarily oral, with cases reported annually in Hokkaido, which has one of the highest rates of reported cases in Japan. Many cases are attributed to consumption of pigs, wild boar, and deer meat. The spread of the disease is diverse, including feed-borne transmission between livestock and transmission through environmental contamination. As a societal problem, there are cases of animal-derived HEV causing hepatitis in humans and cases of subclinical infection with viremia. The other is post-transfusion hepatitis, which occurs in blood transfusion patient through blood donation from infected individuals in a viremic state. Post-transplant hepatitis has also been observed in organ transplantation, although the number of cases is small.
 The characteristic features of this infection are that HEV of animal origin can be a source of infection in humans and that blood from subclinical patients can lead to iatrogenic disease. This is an example of the importance of the One Health approach to infection control.

~Virus hunt in bats in Africa~
 Following the proverb, "Those who drink the water of Africa will return to Africa," after my first visit to Zambia as a university student, I began a journey that has led me to conduct research in Africa for over ten years, including approximately five years based in Zambia. My primary research focus is discovering viruses carried by bats and elucidating their characteristics and ecology. In Zambia, our team confirmed the presence of the Marburg virus, which causes lethal hemorrhagic fever in humans. Surprisingly, this virus resembled the viruses found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, which are 2,000 km away. However, the ecology of the virus—such as when, how, and from where it arrived in Zambia—remains unsolved.
 Viruses infect living cells and utilize their systems to replicate. Thus, understanding the ecology of the hosts is essential to understanding the viruses' ecology. Currently, I am most passionate about biologging studies, in which we release bats equipped with small GPS data loggers into the night sky of Zambia and track their movements via satellites. Our tracking results have successfully captured bats intruding into neighboring countries and densely populated capital areas, revealing that bats travel over a much wider range than previously imagined. In the future, I plan to analyze the risks of virus transmission associated with bat movements. My aim is to conduct research that protects humans and animals from infectious diseases, contributing to their health and happiness. In this context, I believe that understanding the ecology of viruses is essential.

Profile #37: Dr. Masami MORIMATSU, Professor

Department of Applied Veterinary Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

~Was going to be a cattle vet, but now I'm a rodent vet.~
 I am from a dairy farming village in Tokachi, Hokkaido, and I enrolled in university because I wanted to become a cattle veterinarian. However, when I graduated from the university, the Agricultural Mutual Aid Association (now NOSAI) was going through an organizational restructuring and stopped offering jobs, so I remained at the university and continued my research.
 I am currently involved in rodent (mouse and rat) research and related animal experimentation, as well as education and facility management. I studied in a lab in the U.S. that was working with genetically engineered mice and discovered that Rad51 recombinase binds to a breast cancer-susceptibility protein, which led to an expanding interest in cancer and research on canine mammary gland tumors. I also discovered Nfkbiz, a protein that is strongly expressed in inflammation, with Dr. Hiroshi Kitamura (now at Rakuno Gakuen University), with whom I was in the Biochemistry Laboratory, and I discovered that dermatitis is caused when this protein is mutated in mice.
 Humans and animals get sick by the similar mechanism. I am currently working in the field of animal experimentation, where I study animal models of diseases and use the findings to improve human health. It is also an important role of veterinarians to promote animal care and techniques to avoid unnecessarily painful and sickly burdens on animals in these fields.
