This year marks exactly 10 years since I first visited Keisho high school in 2017. Since then, I have been fortunate to visit every year and give mock lectures to high school students. Giving a lecture and sharing the attractiveness of APU is always such a meaningful and rewarding experience. I truly hope many of these students will someday choose to study at APU in the future 🌸

What if your “free time” became a business model?

Japan’s latest trend, “Sukima-Work”, is transforming tiny moments of spare time into economic value.
From 5-minute apartment inspections to singing demo vocals at home, people are monetizing skills, proximity, and even everyday behavior.

But the real marketing insight is this:

This isn’t just about part-time jobs anymore.
It’s about companies redesigning services so customers themselves become part of the operation.

✔ Clean a gym → get membership discounts
✔ Pour your own drinks → save money
✔ Play piano at a ryokan → stay for ¥100
✔ Take photos and upload reports → earn instantly

Instead of hiring full-time labor, businesses are now creating “micro-participation systems” where consumers exchange tiny actions for value.

In marketing terms, this is:

labor gamification
participatory service design
operational crowdsourcing
experience-based incentives

Consumers save money.
Companies reduce labor costs.
And participation itself becomes part of the entertainment.

Japan is quietly turning “spare moments” into a new marketplace.

Why are people spending months waiting for a “hospital” for stuffed animals?

Because Nui-Katsu is no longer just a hobby.
It’s becoming an emotional lifestyle culture.

People travel with plushies, take photos together, and even repair them instead of replacing them.

From a marketing perspective, this trend is fascinating:

→ Products become emotional companions
→ Repair services create long-term customer relationships
→ Memories become more valuable than consumption itself

The stuffed animal is no longer just an object.
It represents identity, comfort, nostalgia, and connection.

And brands are beginning to understand something important:

People don’t just buy products.
They buy emotional continuity.

This is not simply about plush toys.
It’s about the growing value of emotional experiences in modern consumer behavior.

What if a hotel wasn’t just one building?

The “town-wide hotel” concept is redefining travel.

Instead of staying in one place,
you explore, eat, and experience the entire town.

✔ Stay in renovated local houses
✔ Eat at neighborhood restaurants
✔ Discover hidden spots through local interactions

It’s not just accommodation.
It’s experience design.

From a marketing perspective, this is powerful:

→ It increases customer engagement
→ It distributes value across local businesses
→ It turns the entire town into a platform

Travel is no longer about where you stay.
It’s about how deeply you connect.

This is not just tourism.
It’s designed experience + local revitalization.

Prices are rising everywhere.
So people are turning to an “easy solution.”

Eat. Watch. Walk.
Just do it — and earn points.

Sounds simple, right?

But behind this trend, something bigger is happening.

While we collect points in our daily lives,
companies collect data.

What we eat.
What we watch.
Where we go.

This is not just about saving money.
It’s about designed behavior.

Small actions, repeated every day,
are shaping consumer data — and marketing strategies.
