阿蘇ユネスコ世界ジオパーク Aso Unesco Global Geopark A member of JGN, APGN and GGN. Discover the geological wonders of this volcanic land, the rich histo

Located in the center of Kyusyu in southern Japan, A*o UNESCO Global Geopark extends to inside and outside of A*o caldera. The unique topography is known as one of the largest caldera in the world, was formed by four massive eruptions occured between 90,000 and 270,000 years ago. At the central caldera, there is an active Nakadake crater where visitors can look into its activity while standing on its rim. For the past thousand years the predominant activity has ejected volcanic ash, but more powerful eruptions have occurred several times within the past several decades. People in A*o have lived together with the continuous volcanic activities since ancient times, and have created its original culture and history. There are about 70,000 people are living inside and outside of the A*o caldera.

🌏 Celebrating APGN Week: The Grand Finale! 🌿

To mark APGN Week, celebrated across the entire Asia Pacific Geoparks Network, and guided by the leadership of Alireza Amrikazemi and Soma Sayedyounesi of the GGN Geogastronomy Working Group, we explore how the Earth's history shapes the unique flavors of our cultures.

🍎 Vol. 7: Apples from Cheongsong UNESCO Global Geopark (South Korea) 🇰🇷
In Cheongsong UGGp, where dinosaur footprints from the Cretaceous period mark the land, another treasure flourishes: Apples.🍎

These crisp, sweet fruits are the pride of the region, used in everything from fresh snacks to delightful local pastries.
However, even here, the challenges of global warming are beginning to show. Cheongsong is rising to the occasion, finding innovative ways to maintain production and add new value to their harvest.

📖Education and Pride🧑‍🧑‍🧒: A Taste of Heritage
What makes Cheongsong truly special is how the Geopark connects the land to the next generation:
• The Producers’ Voice: Local farmers personally share their knowledge with children, instilling a deep sense of pride in their hometown.

• Beyond Competition: It’s not about being "better" than another region—it’s about the unique story that the Earth and its people have written together over millions of years.

🍎🦕A Bite Across Time 🦕🍎
As I took a bite of a sweet Cheongsong apple, my mind drifted between the past and the present. I couldn't help but wonder: Would a Brachiosaurus have enjoyed these as much as we do? And if so, how many thousands of apples would it take to satisfy such a massive prehistoric neighbor?
When we eat, we don't just consume nutrients; we connect with the deep history of our planet.

🌍 Thank you for joining our Geogastronomy journey!
This APGN Week, we’ve traveled from geothermal steam to volcanic coffee and prehistoric apple orchards. Let’s continue to cherish the wisdom of our ancestors and the gifts of the Earth.

🌏 **Celebrating APGN Week!** 🌿
To mark **APGN Week**, celebrated across the entire Asia Pacific Geoparks Network, and guided by the leadership of Alireza Amrikazemi and Soma Sayedyounesi of the GGN Geogastronomy Working Group, we explore how the Earth's history shapes the unique flavors of our cultures.

☕ **Vol. 6: Coffee from Rinjani Lombok Unesco Global Geopark (Indonesia)** 🇮🇩
Coffee is more than just a delicious drink; it is a profound reminder of our connection to the planet. Cultivated along the global "Coffee Belt," much of the world’s finest coffee grows in the shadows of majestic volcanoes.

However, coffee also tells a complex story. Today, we face the challenges of maintaining production amidst climate change. We must also reflect on the historical burdens of unequal trade and labor.
That is why we believe a cup of coffee is not just "seed to cup"—it is "Earth to seed, and seed to cup."

It is a true masterpiece of Geogastronomy, where human endeavor and the Earth's systems are intricately layered.

☕️More Than a Beverage: A Network of Life
Beyond its flavor, coffee brings healing and builds irreplaceable networks of friendship. In Rinjani-Lombok UNESCO Global Geopark, both Robusta and Arabica beans are nurtured by the unique volcanic terroir of the island.

🌋A Personal Memory from the Caldera🌋
Sharing a cup inside the Rinjani caldera was an unforgettable life experience. This memory wouldn't exist without Meli, Farid , the dramatic caldera landscape, the farmers, the roasters, the person who dripped the coffee, and even the artisans who crafted the cups.

✈️Experience the Moment📷
Whether your interest lies in volcanoes, culture, economics, or simply finding a peaceful moment with family and friends, Rinjani-Lombok offers an experience that can only be tasted in that specific landscape, at that exact moment.
Next time you hold a cup of coffee, take a moment to savor the Earth beneath it. ☕✨

🌍 **Taste the Story of the Volcano!**
Join us as we celebrate the connections that brew between the Earth and our souls.

🌏 Celebrating APGN Week!

Today, we are moving beyond the plate to explore the Intangible Cultural Heritage. 🍽️✨

🌊 Vol. 5: The Haenyeo (Women Divers) of Jeju island UNESCO Global Geopark (South Korea) 🇰🇷
In Jeju UGGp, the Haenyeo represent the ultimate connection between humanity and the sea. These traditional female divers plunge 10 to 20 meters deep into the ocean without oxygen tanks to harvest seafood.
Living on a volcanic island, they have mastered the art of survival and sustainable harvesting. They remind us that the seafood on our tables is not a given—it is a result of deep respect for marine ecosystems and ancient skill.

A Legacy of Sustainability
The culture of the Haenyeo is globally recognized for its significance:
• UNESCO Connection: In 2016, their culture was inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Jeju UGGp serves as a brilliant example of synergy between different UNESCO programs.

A*o UGGp
“Managing A*o Grasslands for Sustainable Agriculture, Japan”

• Wisdom of the Past: Much like the traditional Sato-yama systems in A*o UGGp (where ancient grassland management like Noyaki is recognized as a GIAHS site), these practices teach us how to sustain our environment for the next generation.

Bridging Past, Present, and Future
The core of Geogastronomy is not just about "deliciousness"—it is about touching the wisdom of the past to envision our future.

The past and present are a single continuous path, just as the present and future are inextricably linked. We cannot plan for a future by ignoring our history; instead, we must learn from the lives and resilience of those who came before us. 🌋🌊
