Sharing culture in Tama!

At a Tama citizens event, we had a great time sharing our own cultures through trivia and dance, while learning some Nihon Buyō dance movements from the local community.

A visit to a Japanese driving school!

Today we learned how driver training works in Japan, exploring the similarities and differences compared to our home countries with the help of some fantastic guides.

We also got to see the training courses and try simulators used for situations like difficult weather conditions, city motorcycle riding, and handling bikes on different terrain.

A look at Japanese innovation!

Today our participants split into groups for visits to KDDI and Haseko.

At KDDI, we explored the history of telecommunications in Japan, following the evolution of everything from early communication technology to modern mobile phones.

At Haseko, we learned about the evolution of apartment living in Japan through interactive exhibits, including changing interior design, architecture, and disaster preparedness.

A Jōdō experience!

Today we learned about Jōdō, the Japanese martial art of the jō (short staff), originally developed for defense against the sword. After an impressive demonstration, we tried one of the basic movements ourselves.

We also got to see the traditional kusarigama (chain and sickle) in action!

Welcome to Tama!

We've arrived in Tama, Tokyo. The final stop of this year's World Campus program!

We received an incredible welcome from the local organizing committee, volunteers, the mayor, and city staff, setting the stage for an unforgettable final week. We wrapped up the day with a World Campus Tama tradition: singing a special version of "Country Roads" with lyrics inspired by Tama.

A wonderful day at Chuo Gakuin University!

Together with student volunteers, we experienced several traditional aspects of Japanese culture. We practiced calligraphy, writing our names in kanji on uchiwa (fans) with guidance from a calligraphy master, and learned about the tea ceremony, watching the tea club's demonstration before trying to prepare matcha ourselves.

Throughout the day, we enjoyed games, conversations, and meals together, making it a great opportunity to connect with the university students.

Feeling the power of Taiko!

Today we were treated to an incredible performance by Tsukushino Kirin Taiko, featuring a three-song medley including Sōran Bushi and one of the group's original compositions.

After the performance, we got behind the drums ourselves, learning some of the rhythms and playing together under the guidance of the performers. It was an amazing opportunity to experience the energy, teamwork, and precision of taiko firsthand.

Learning the art of Naginata!

Today we got a hands-on introduction to naginata, a traditional Japanese martial art centered around the long-bladed polearm. We learned about its history, from its use by warrior monks to its role as a form of self-defense practiced by samurai wives during the Edo period.

After learning the basic scoring strikes, we suited up in the protective armor, practiced a kata (pre-arranged form), and experienced the technique and discipline behind this unique martial art.

Experiencing traditional Japanese dance!

We dressed in yukata and learned traditional Japanese dances together. The girls performed with beautifully decorated flower sticks, while the boys danced with colorful sensu (folding fans), guided by a local instructor and her small helpers.

A wonderful opportunity to experience Japanese culture by learning, moving, and having fun together!

A hands-on Kendama experience!

Today we had the opportunity to learn kendama from the Japanese Kendama Champion. After learning about the traditional Japanese skill toy, we practiced a variety of tricks and challenged ourselves to improve.

We also enjoyed a short demonstration showcasing just how much skill and precision kendama can involve.
