In IaaS and PaaS Convergence, It’s PaaS That Should Lead — Recent commentaries by cloud industry luminaries Reuven Cohen & Krishnan Subramanian address key issues related to relative importance and potential longevity of an independent Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). In his commentary, Reuven poses, "Do consumers really care about the difference between IaaS and PaaS?" The answer to this question is most likely, no, but that doesn't eliminate the need for distinction, it merely is a matter of how best to deliver the value of cloud computing to users. In his commentary, Krishnan does an excellent job of exploring one way to classify PaaS as either service or container orchestration. However, in some ways, the distinction introduces more confusion. For example, his use of Docker illustrates how convergence of IaaS and PaaS actually makes sense for the industry and, thus, diminishes his key point that there's value in the cloud application layer existing as a distinct layer within the cloud stack.

Cloud Computing's Paradox: More IT, But Less IT Management Wither the information technology department? There's been no end to speculation as of late, as employees bring their own devices to work, marketing chiefs grab more technology budget dollars, and everyone signs up and tends to their own cloud realms. Gartner, the analyst firm created by and for t...
Cloud computing is all the rage. "It's become the phrase du jour," says Gartner senior analyst Ben Pring, echoing many of his peers. The problem is that (as with Web 2.0) everyone seems to have a different definition.
As a metaphor for the Internet, "the cloud" is a familiar cliché, but when combined with "computing," the meaning gets bigger and fuzzier. Some analysts and vendors define cloud computing narrowly as an updated version of utility computing: basically virtual servers available over the Internet. Others go very broad, arguing anything you consume outside the firewall is "in the cloud," including conventional outsourcing.

GigaSpaces Technologies: GigaSpaces is a platform for automating application deployment to a variety of environments, including public and private clouds, as well as physical hardware. The company's newest product is Cloudify, which it markets as a private platform as a service (PaaS) for deploying applications to public cloud environments without requiring changes to the code. It uses a relationship the company just inked with Chef to automate these tasks.
