I loved our “Through Local Eyes” tour because it showed me a a perspective on the city that I never would have experienced on my own. Our guide took us to local shops partnered with the program and shared personal stories about his life in Amman, rather than just reciting facts. The tour helped me understand the differences between East and West Amman and introduced me to the history of these neighborhoods and the people that shape them. One moment that really stood out was stopping to read a poem written on a parking garage. Days after the tour I still think about this poem regularly, and it’s something I never would have noticed without the tour. I’m very grateful to Through Local Eyes for this experience and to SIT for providing such an immersive introduction to Amman. I’m excited to continue exploring the city this semester! We are delighted to congratulate our SIT Arabic instructor, Ahlam Sukar, on the successful completion of her Master’s degree in Arabic for Non-Native Speakers. Her commitment to excellence in language education continues to inspire our students and colleagues. We look forward to celebrating her future achievements and ongoing contributions to the field. Ahlam study emphasizes the importance of general and critical reading skills and their influence on student achievement. It identifies a gap in existing curricula regarding standards for developing these skills and proposes a model to guide curriculum design and improve teaching practices.
