Core Language Functions (The “Why”)
A beginner course moves away from pure grammar rules to teach you the purposes for which we use language. You will learn the specific phrases to achieve these goals:
• Introducing Yourself and Others: Both formal (job interviews, meeting a client) and informal (a party, a casual encounter) settings.
• Asking and Answering Basic Questions: Learning how to form and respond to “Who,” “What,” “Where,” “When,” and “How” questions.
• Talking About Yourself: Sharing personal information such as name, age, nationality, job, and studies.
• Describing Routines: Talking about your daily activities and mentioning the times you do them (e.g., “I get up at 7 AM,” “I have lunch at noon”).
• Making Plans: Discussing simple plans for the near or distant future using basic expressions.
• Asking for Clarification: Essential “survival” skills like “I’m sorry, I don’t understand. Could you repeat that?” or “What does that word mean?”
• Managing Social Interaction: Learning polite ways to say “Hello,” “Goodbye,” “Thank you,” “You’re welcome,” and “How are you?”
Essential Vocabulary Areas (The “What”)
Vocabulary is taught in “chunks” or topics rather than random word lists:
• Personal Data: Countries, nationalities, jobs, family members.
• Numbers & Time: Essential for buying things, booking appointments, and telling the time.
• Hobbies & Interests: Useful for finding common ground in conversation (e.g., “Do you do any sports?
• Common Situations: Topics might include daily life, shopping, directions, health, and jobs.
• “Small Talk” Topics: Safe, polite topics like the weather, weekend plans, and travel plans.
