Play with your children
Children learn through their play.
Don’t underestimate the value of play. Children learn and develop:
• cognitive skills – like math and problem solving in a pretend grocery store.
• physical abilities – like balancing blocks and running on the playground
• new vocabulary – like the words they need to play with toys
• social skills – like playing together in a pretend doctor/patient
• literacy skills – like creating a menu for a pretend restaurant.

If a child tells you that someone is harming them:
listen to them.

**Don't dismiss what they say. It takes a lot of courage for a child to tell about abuse.

**Reassure them that they are right to tell you

**Stay calm.

**They may be afraid to say more if you are shocked or upset
don't ask lots of questions.

**Let them tell you in their own words at their own pace

**Make sure that the child is safe and let them know you will do your best to stop them being harmed
