@tropicaljerk’s Jamaican dishes hit different! Their Jerk Chicken, Barbie Fry, and other dishes are made with love and fresh ingredients. READ BELOW 👇 for more info!

Tropical Jerk opened its 7th location in Hempstead, LI (📍255 Fulton Ave, Hempstead, NY). It’s a family-owned business that was started in 2004 by Norman and Sophia Frater – a couple who grew up in Jamaica. Originally, Norman was a dollar van driver in Queens while Sophia worked at a nursing home. As Norman continued to cook for him and Sophia’s friends… an idea came to light. The Fraters opened Tropical Jerk to share their food with the local community throughout Queens and Long Island.

During my visit, I got their Jerk Chicken platter with rice and peas (with oxtail gravy) and steamed veggies. The chicken is marinated in homemade seasoning and perfectly charred on the grill. Shabana mentioned that all the seasoning gets barreled and is made fresh from scratch.

Now, the Barbie Fry is as amazing as it looks. The chicken is fried until golden and then basted in their electrifying “Barbie” sauce. I was immediately amazed when I had my first bite. It was crispy, juicy, tangy, sweet, and slightly spicy all at the same time. Finally, I also had their Jerk Salmon which was glazed perfectly. The tender bites of salmon paired with white rice.
