JIRC is a strategic initiative designed to support & increase Literacy Development through education, poverty, peace and cultural development. Our non-profit organization is registered with Companies Office of Jamaica. We are dedicated to developing readers of all ages to a higher level of proficiency. to eradicate illiteracy among children and adolescents at risk for reading failures in Jamaica;
2. empower socially disadvantaged people to participate more effectively in national socioeconomic development processes through Literacy;
3. fulfil the constitutional right of all citizens to gain access to basic education through Literacy;
4. foster social transformation through civic and public awareness through Literacy;
5. provide simple, low-resource strategies for Jamaica and other developing countries outside Jamaica;
6. support teachers in responding to students need through context base text;
7. ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning (Goal 4, United Nations);
8. ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes through Literacy (Goal 4, United Nations);
9. ensure equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university through Literacy (Goal 4, United Nation);
10. ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy (Goal 4, United Nations);
11. eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for the vulnerable, including persons with disabilities, indigenous people and children in vulnerable situations;
We also embrace a mission that is grounded in cognitive neuroscience, learning styles, reading research and the cultural, linguistic, social and developmental needs of diverse learners. The Jamaica Intensive Reading Clinic helps students to use theoretical and practical reading strategies to learn and master the art of Reading. We closely support the vision of UNESCO, UNICEF and the Ministry of Education. Each learner is taught by a Reading Specialist or a trained Volunteer using relevant context based books. We offer intensive reading programmes and ongoing intervention projects that will help children to develop their reading skills.
