Incoming fourth-year Computer Science student Daniel Folkes is a two-time recipient of the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship. Ambitious, adaptable, and people-oriented, Folkes is passionate about improving the lives of those around him.

Though computer science was not always his field of interest, his problem-solving and technology skills were brought to light when he completed two units of the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) computer science course in one year. During that time, his love for coding and all things computer science drastically grew. This led him to pursuing his degree at Northern Caribbean University (NCU).

Folkes' journey through NCU started in 2023. His choice to attend NCU stemmed primarily from scholarship opportunities and the reputation of the Computer Science programme. โ€œWhen I was having issues with finances, NCU was the only university in Jamaica that was handing me scholarships before I even arrived. Not to mention that NCU has the best Computer Science programme in the island.โ€ Folkes said.

Throughout his time at NCU, Folkes has experienced both academic and personal growth. He credits his lecturers as an integral part of his development. โ€œHaving lecturers who see you as more than just an ID number, lecturers who show up for you, lectures who stand out, lecturers who make learning more than just bookwork โ€“but prepare you as a person and for the working worldโ€“ has driven me to do so much better,โ€ Folkes said.

In the next five years, Folkes sees himself pursuing a master's degree and potentially a doctorate. He hopes to climb the corporate ladder and become more involved in research, and is open to the idea of eventually teaching at the tertiary level.

Folkes encourages individuals to make NCU their university of choice. โ€œColleagues, no matter where you go, itโ€™s what you make of it. If you come to NCU with a mind to learn, to thrive, and to develop holistically into a person who will excel in the working world, NCU is for you,โ€ Folkes affirmed.

Monique Holding is a freshman at the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) pursuing a degree in Biological Science. NCU awarded her a scholarship as a prize for winning the Ministry of Educationโ€™s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) competition in 2025.

Her choice of study stemmed from her interest in agricultural science. โ€œI have always been fascinated by the molecular body within agricultural science and botany. Iโ€™ve always been amazed by the medicinal properties that plants have to offer,โ€ Holding explained. โ€œSo, when I noticed that I can link my passion for agricultural science with science overall, I chose biological sciences because it is vast, and it can also put me in the position of becoming a pathologist.โ€ she added.

Although offered another scholarship, Holding chose to accept the offer from NCU. She credits her choice of NCU to the culture and values of the institution. โ€œI chose NCU because it gave me that academic opportunity, and it gave me the opportunity to actually be myself. I am in a completely new environment,โ€ she said. โ€œI am meeting people for the first time, and they are actually seeing me for not just what social media says about me, but for what I truly am: not only an academic achiever, but they see me for the bubbly personality that I have.โ€ Holding shared.

She also believes that going to NCU has fueled her spiritual growth. Her experiences of Christ-centered courses, prayer gardens, and prayers before every class have shaped her greatly. โ€œPersonally speaking, it has fueled my spiritual growth.โ€

She disclosed that prior to getting the scholarship she was facing challenges, but the scholarship from NCU came at the perfect time. โ€œ They are so welcoming, the teachers, the staff members are so kind. There are times when I have struggled with my school work. I could simply go and speak to the teachers and they helped me,โ€ Holding relayed.

Beyond her academic pursuits, Holding has a passion for darts and dance. In July,
Holding will be representing Jamaica in the Caribbean and Latin American Darts Championship. She is also an awardee for the Marcus Garvey award, in which she won the Lโ€™Antoinette Stiles Trophy. This honour was given for being the Most Outstanding Soloist Dancer.

Holding encourages prospective students to make NCU their choice for higher education.
โ€œIt is more than a โ€˜beacon on the hillโ€™. It is a safe haven. It is a place where you gain multiple opportunities. They have job fairs. They recently had a health conference. There are many clubs and societies that actually make you connect with the community,โ€ Holding related excitedly.

โ€œI believe that NCU is the place, if you want to grow spiritually with God and you want to be on the path of righteousness as well as pursuing your career. It's a win-win situation,โ€ Holding asserted.

The revival of industries at Northern Caribbean University (NCU) is among the vision of Pastor Glen Samuels, incoming president of the Jamaica Union ( JAMU) Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, which operates the Mandeville-based institution of higher learning.

Speaking during his inauguration held recently at NCU, Pastor Samuels said, โ€œWe must reopen our industries so that those who cannot pave their own way can at least have a starting point.โ€ He disclosed that investors had already committed to restarting the bakery that the institution (then West Indies College) once operated and revive other industries. The university currently operates a commercial printery, a hotel and a restaurant, with the strategic goal to increase the ratio of non-tuition to tuition income.

Pastor Samuels, who also recently assumed the position of chairman of the NCU board of governors, indicated the institutionโ€™s desire to expand itโ€™s nursing education programme to meet enrolment demand. โ€œI publicly appeal on behalf of the hundreds who want to pursue nursing, that together the church and the Ministry [of health and wellness ] can forge a partnership strong enough to allow many others to accomplish their dreams and goals,โ€ Samuels told the audience that included health minister, Dr Christopher Tufton.

He also declared that it was time for NCU to have a medical school in addition to its existing nursing school and allied health programmes including medical technology, dietetics and dental hygiene .

The inauguration, held May 9, 2026, was attended by former JAMU president, Governor General Sir Patrick Allen along with Lady Allen; Deputy Prime Minister Dr Horace Chang; Leader of Opposition Mark Golding; as well as Dr. Abner de los Santos, president of the Inter-American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, among other civic and church representatives.

In addition to his vision for NCU, the head of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jamaica pointed to its mission: โ€œWe must never forget that our theology cannot be separated from our sociology. What we say about God must be demonstrated in how we relate to people for God. Religion cannot be separated from life.โ€

Relating to ministry, Pastor Samuels urged Government, Opposition and the Church to forge an alliance to give hope and opportunity to those who have intellectual capacity but lack the capital to get a start because that is what the gospel is about โ€” bringing hope to the hopeless. โ€œWe must strive to build a better Jamaica for all Jamaicans,โ€ he told the audience.

Pointing to mentorship, Samuels shared: โ€œWe must change the trajectory of the lives of many who were told they would amount to nothing. I have seen God transform lives in remarkable ways. I know a pastor today who was once left for dead after a violent attack. Yet God transformed his life, and today he pastors five congregations in the western region.โ€

Pastor Samuels, the immediate past president of the Western Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, took the opportunity to thank congregations in the United States which donated Hurricane Melissa relief supplies. The donors included the Florida Conference, the South-eastern Conference, and the North-eastern Conference.
