Parents, Stop Ignoring the Obvious: Your Child's Learning Gaps Are Holding Them Back!

As the new school year begins this week, there's a palpable sense of excitement in the air. However, behind the back-to-school buzz, a critical issue is being overlooked by many parents: learning gaps. Every child starts the year with some gaps in their knowledge, and if these gaps aren't addressed, they risk falling behind for the entire academic year.

Consider this: if a report card comes home showing your child has scored 90%, it means there are still gaps in understanding that need to be addressed. If your child scores 30%, this suggests there are significant areas of missing knowledge or skills that are crucial for future learning. Whether large or small, these gaps indicate that a child’s understanding is incomplete. We cannot simply move children from grade to grade without addressing these deficiencies. If you were building a house and realized the construction was weak, would you continue adding more storeys without fixing the foundation? Yet, this is precisely what happens when we allow children to progress through school without closing their learning gaps.

Primary school should be seen as the process of constructing a six-storey building. The foundation is the essential knowledge and skills a child gains in early education. If this foundation is weak or incomplete, the entire structure becomes unstable. Similarly, if a child lacks fundamental knowledge from previous grades, they will struggle to grasp new concepts, leading to a challenging and frustrating school year.

For example, if a second-grade teacher plans to teach students to count from 20 to 100, a child who hasn’t yet mastered counting from 1 to 10 will face a significant barrier. Unlike starting with a clean slate, each new academic year builds upon the knowledge acquired in the previous one. Without the requisite knowledge from the previous years, the learning process becomes disjointed and overwhelming.

Parents, it's time to acknowledge the reality: if your child is bringing home report cards with gaps, these gaps must be addressed immediately. Expecting children to succeed without first filling these gaps is setting them up for failure. This neglect is not only a disservice to their current learning but also undermines their future potential.

Recognizing the importance of addressing these gaps early, the team at LearningHub, led by Dr. Shalette Ashman, offers a targeted learning approach specifically designed to quickly identify and close these gaps. The process begins with a comprehensive assessment to pinpoint specific areas of weakness. Once these gaps are identified, a customized course is created to address and fill them through a focused 14-day mastery program.

But the work doesn’t stop there. To ensure no new gaps form, the educators at LearningHub Academy continue to work with students weekly after the initial two-week program, reinforcing what is taught in class and deepening their understanding. This proactive approach provides continuous support, helping to prevent gaps and push students to the top of their class. LearningHub Academy works with students from kindergarten to grade 9, empowering them with the skills they need to excel academically.

With the new school year about to start, the first two weeks are a critical window of opportunity. Don’t let your child fall further behind. Contact Dr. Shalette Ashman directly on WhatsApp at (954) 687-3375 to see if the targeted learning approach is right for your child and start closing those gaps today.

Graduation is a special time, and I am honored to be invited to speak at multiple ceremonies each year. This week, I spoke at Tidy Tots on Sunday and Ritches Primary on Tuesday, where I was warmly welcomed by the principal and vice principal. At Ritches Primary, I emphasized to the students that their school has prepared them well for the future by instilling in them the values of being Respectful, Intelligent, Courteous, and Honest (RICH). I reminded them that respect means valuing others, intelligence is about curiosity and critical thinking, courtesy involves simple acts of kindness, and honesty is the foundation of trust. As they move on to high school, I encouraged them to dream big, work hard, and continue embodying these RICH values to achieve their goals.
