History
Caribbean Institute of Hospitality, formerly Jan’s School of Catering, emerged in 1982 from the passionate desire of founder Emlyn Janise Butler to share with fellow Jamaicans her knowledge and skills in the food service area. This dream, which started in the small of her kitchen, moved to Mannings Hill Road, then to Dumbarton Ave, and finally found a home at 29 Courtney Walsh Drive (formerly Derrymore Road). From just five students, who attended free of cost in 1982, Caribbean Institute of Hospitality has developed into one of Jamaica’s premier education and training organizations, offering courses in Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry, Waitering and Housekeeping. Caribbean Institute of Hospitality was formally accorded recognition as a certified training organization in 1991 by the Ministry of Education, and currently partners with HEART College of Hospitality Service (formerly Runaway Bay HEART Training Institute) to offer NVQ-J Awards in several areas. As a skills training centre, offering the NCTVET/ HEART Trust/NTA certification, Caribbean Institute of Hospitality is committed to contributing to national development by producing skilled, employable, and responsible graduates who can succeed in today’s dynamic world and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
