The University was established in 1958, originally under the name the Jamaica Institute of Technology. This was validated by an Act of Parliament in 1964.

In 1959, the name was changed to the College of Arts, Science and Technology, and became incorporated under the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST) Scheme of 1959. In 1986, the CAST Scheme was revised in order to make the College a degree granting institution. Professor Adella Campbell, Lecturer in the College of Health Sciences, has been appointed to the International Advisory Council of The Nurses Magazine, effective August 1, 2026.

Her two-year appointment recognises her leadership and contributions to nursing education, research, healthcare and professional development, while bringing Jamaican and Caribbean perspectives to an international platform for nursing excellence and innovation.

AI, innovation and Africa-Caribbean collaboration take centre stage at UTech, Jamaica this October.

From October 13–16, 2026, the University will host the Pan-African/Caribbean Artificial Intelligence and Smart Systems Conference (PAAISS 2026), bringing together researchers, academics, policymakers, industry leaders, innovators and students from Africa, the Caribbean and beyond.

With a focus on AI, smart systems, digital transformation and emerging technologies, PAAISS 2026 will create space for new research, partnerships and conversations about how AI can shape our future, particularly from an African and Caribbean perspective.
