2025 wrapped at the Jersey International Centre of Advanced Studies π₯³
We've had a wonderful year saying goodbye to previous cohorts and welcoming new students to campus in addition to the running of field schools and fieldtrips.
π¦ As the winter weather cleared we headed out to deploy BRUVs with Jersey Marine Conservation in March.
π We welcomed Dr Jesse Longhurst to Jersey to deliver a Cafe Scientifique on Small Island Schools.
πͺΈ JICAS students Beckie Scaife and Bram Wanrooji presented their research as part of the Societe Jersiaise Lunchtime Lecture Series in April.
β΅ Our director took a trip to Antigua to strengthen our collaboration and secure the 2026 field schools (apply now!).
π΄ May took us to Tenerife for Island Conservation in Action and a final hurrah for the class of 2025 before they headed off to complete their thesis projects.
β We welcomed a consortium of academics to Jersey for the Islands and Island Studies 2025 Conference at the start of June.
π At the end of June we won the Schools & Youth Group Green Award at the Insurance Corporation Conservation Awards 2025 for our part in the 'Delivering STEM through Marine Conservation' project with Jersey Marine Conservation and the Jersey Sea Cadets.
πΊAnother successful Island Archaeology Summer School took place in June & July with the Societe Jersiaise Archaeology Section & Jersey Heritage.
π° Our PhD candidates Josh Smith and Rees Monet were awarded grants to support their ongoing research by the Societe Jersiaise.
π± We welcomed students back to campus in September for one of our favourite days in the academic calendar where the previous cohort present their research projects and the new cohort commence their academic journey.
π October sun allowed us to make the most of fieldwork from trips to the Ecrehous with Island Rib Voyages to data collection in St Catherine's Woodland, and tours of the Norman Le Brocq by the Government of Jersey Marine Resources Department.
π Our director took a trip to Malta to develop projects and our ongoing relationship with the Small Islands Research Institute.
π Students from the Class of 2025 attended their graduation in December and celebrated their hard work and well-deserved postgraduate degrees.
JICAS is now closed for the 2025 festive break, we will be open again on Monday 5th January and look forward to welcoming our MSc students back to campus from the 19th January as they commence their next module. During this time you can still contact us with your queries at [email protected]

ππ¦ Student Spotlight π»π¬
Susan Le Gresley is from Jersey and holds a BA in Spanish and Business Studies from the University of Hull. Having worked in the finance sector for several years, Susan made the decision to enrol on the MSc Island Biodiversity and Conservation programme to transition into a field she cares deeply about. On the part-time pathway, Susan is moving into the second year of her studies and is building on her research into maerl beds she started last academic year.
Susan says -
βAfter many years working in the finance sector I decided it was time to make a big change and pursue a career in something I cared deeply about. Iβve always had a love of the ocean and marine life, but as time has gone on I have found myself wanting to learn more about what can be done to protect them. This led me to start studying the MSc Island Biodiversity and Conservation programme.β πͺΈ
Susan is a part-time student on the MSc Island Biodiversity and Conservation programme delivered in partnership with the University of Exeter. She was the recipient of the Marie Lawton Scholarship, awarded to a Jersey or Channel Islands resident each academic year.
