A great end to the week for Year 8, with their focus firmly on House badminton and House cricket. An incredibly high standard of play and great sportsmanship from all involved – with more games scheduled, we now await the results with anticipation!

What a fabulous couple of days of fieldwork preparing the Year 12s for their Geography NEA/Coursework unit.

On Thursday, we had a productive day collecting beach and sand dune data in the west of the island, with the departments and pupils of Jersey Jersey College for Girls and Victoria College working together.

Friday focused on urban geography, beginning with an insightful talk from Mr Lee Henry (CEO of Jersey Development Company) on the Horizon development. Students then carried out fieldwork in St Helier, before finishing the day at Jersey Museum, exploring themes of the island’s culture and identity.

Thank you to Mr Allan, Miss Wyatt, Mr Palfreyman and the team at JCG for organising such valuable and engaging experiences.

Community, Collaboration and Friendship

Yesterday Year 7 enjoyed their final Joint PSHE lesson of the year with students from Jersey College for Girls - there was lots of fun and laughter as they got stuck into multiple activities including completing quizzes, building marshmallow towers, making the London Eye out of straws and a race to make the longest paper chain. It was a fabulous demonstration of collaboration and teamwork - well done Year 7! We hope you've had a great year getting to know each other and making new friends!

Student Leadership in Action: Strengthening Connections Across the College

A new initiative led by our Prefect team is strengthening connections across the College, with Prefects now visiting younger tutor groups to build relationships, share ideas, and lead meaningful discussions.

As Diversity & Inclusion Prefect, Alaric reflects:

“This time for tutor groups to get to know us is really useful for Prefect visibility. During the most recent tutor time, I spent twenty minutes with Year 8 discussing the Jersey election before leading a debate on topics like taxes and government spending. It’s great to be able to support the College’s focus on collaboration and peer support across year groups in this way."

Prefects are also looking ahead to introducing wellbeing-focused tutor time sessions, including ‘wellbeing walks’, designed to encourage reflection, conversation, and even stronger connections between year groups.

It’s fantastic to see such initiative, leadership, and community in action.

We are incredibly proud of Monty for his outstanding success in the Ocean Narrative Challenge.

Last Friday, Monty attended the prize ceremony at the Water Splash as part of Ocean Week, where there was an impressive turnout of pupils from schools across the Island.

We are delighted to share that Monty won the top prize, with his beautiful watercolour painting ‘Handing Over The Sunset’ selected from over 400 entries.

As part of his prize, Monty will collaborate with a local artist to transform his artwork into a large-scale mural at Elizabeth Marina as part of Art in the Arches 2026. The finished mural is set to be unveiled in late July and will be widely publicised both locally and internationally.

Students at Victoria College were invited to create an original ocean-inspired story, exploring marine conservation themes and reflecting on their personal connection to the ocean through different forms of creative storytelling.

We also congratulate all of our students who were selected to attend the awards ceremony - a fantastic achievement and thoroughly deserved recognition of their creativity and effort: Murray, George M, Jakob, George C, Edward, William and Theodore. A fantastic achievement and a proud moment for Victoria College - well done to all involved.

Last Friday, Victoria College's Culture Club and Miss Kemp joined Jersey College for Girls' students for their incredible and vibrant Festival of Cultures.

We had a fantastic time learning about the indigenous origins and creating our own dream catchers (or dream snares) in our first workshop. Meanwhile, our Diversity and Inclusion prefect, Alaric, joined the sixth formers for an informative and moving seminar on sustainability. Alaric then returned to our group for a student-led musical workshop performing samba rhythms using a variety of percussion instruments. We had an incredible morning of learning and creativity.

As always, a highlight was the food festival! A diverse and delicious range of foods and drink from across the globe was on offer (and consumed) and the atmosphere too was vibrant, animated and full of positive energy. It was a true celebration of multiculturalism, collaboration and community, and we had a fantastic time; thank you so much JCG for including us. We have been inspired!

Starting this week, 32 Year 12s have been competing in a new darts open competition. This provides a new and exciting enrichment opportunity for students at lunchtime and has, so far, seen a great turnout, not just from competitors but also from spectators.

The idea started amongst a small group of sixth formers after darts hit the headlines, attracting a new, younger audience. Led by student voice, the College supported the purchase of a full darts 'set up' for use in the competition. In the future, the Sixth Form Committee would like to expand the concept to younger years and potentially involve the Houses to make it into a new House event.

Arts Prefect, Morgan, said, 'this is a fantastic example of the wide range of co-curricular opportunities at Victoria College, and the impact of student voice on driving the introduction of new and exciting activities.'

Braving the elements - still smiling and excited for their DofE Training Day ahead. Well done Year 9, living our school value of resilience!

Our Year 9 students took an important step towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award this week with a hands-on training day.

Throughout the day, students developed key outdoor and practical skills, including map reading, first aid, assembling and safely using a Trangia stove, and learning how to pitch their tents independently.

It was fantastic to see them working together, building confidence, and supporting one another as they prepared for their expedition. These experiences are an essential part of the DofE journey, helping students develop resilience, teamwork, and independence.
We look forward to seeing them put these skills into practice on their expedition.

This year's mock election was even more closely fought than previous years. Aside from the spirited campaigning and populist policies, the three candidates engaged well with the process, taking part in hustings with the lower school and Sixth Form and canvassing for votes during breaks and lunchtimes. Election day saw a voter turnout of 46% with the vast majority of votes coming from Year 7 and Year 12. Once counted, the votes illustrated an incredibly close margin which required several recounts. However, in the end, the winner, by one vote, was Praj - well done!

This election was part of a wider strategy to engage our students in the democratic process. We are grateful to the States Greffe for their involvement, who delivered sessions across the years. This, combined with a series of lessons in PSHE for Year 11, which were co-designed with Dr Chris Pich and Dr Guja Armannsdottir from the University of Nottingham, aimed to increase interest in civic participation. We won't know yet if this has made a difference to overall voter turnout from young people in Jersey, but we are optimistic for change.
