Core Learning offers one to one tutoring from KS1 to GCSE, exam support and consultation in educational needs What is Core Learning? What do we do? Who are we?
Throughout Chris’ teaching career, supporting children who find mainstream schooling challenging academically and/or emotionally has always been the primary interest and focus. Core Learning, already in its 4th year, maintains that focus. We offer one to one sessions in the core elements of english (spellings, handwriting, reading and writing) and maths, focusing on the self esteem and confidence
of each pupil, which underpins all and any learning. Ultimately, the correct approach to learning is the one that suits the pupil, so we endeavour to find just that. We are more than happy to work with targets already in place from a pupil's school and to integrate them into sessions as needed, or to create a learning pathway for a pupil as required. Secondly, we offer focussed exam and assessment preparation, working on exam technique and surrounding confidences, for entrance papers to secondary schools in particular. Thirdly, Chris offers a consultation and support service for parents wishing to discuss their son or daughter's educational needs, often in the light of accompanying diagnosis or difficulties experienced with their schooling. This service has the aim of improving the support network around a parent and their child by opening doors to resources and services that will be of benefit to them and their education. We are a small but skilled and enthusiastic team of tutors who work one to one with pupils from KS1, right up to GCSE, in English and maths. Different tutors have different areas of expertise, so we always endeavour to match a pupil and their needs to the best tutor to support and address them. We all work in schools or education settings, so tutoring is something we fit around our work and your requirements. Our key areas are:
Chris - KS2 maths and English, assessment and consultation services
Jo - KS2 and KS3 maths
Hannah - KS1 and KS2 English
Stuart - KS3 and GCSE maths
Mick - GCSE English and Functional Skills English
We are all DBS checked and insured and between us have qualifications such as first aid, mental health first aid, SPELL (Autism), ADHD and dyslexia training. Chris is also a designated safeguarding lead and has previously held the role of SENCo in school. How does it work? When you make an enquiry, you will be invited to share and discuss your needs with Chris initially, who will then link you to one of our tutors. You may find you have to go on the waiting list initially as we are wonderfully busy, but please don't let that put you off making that initial connection - we would love to hear from you to see if we can offer what you are looking for. If you like the sound of us and the way we work, you will then be invited to have a first session. There are no block bookings or minimum requirements. If it all works, it works and future sessions can then be booked in for however long you would like them for. When and where? Sessions are after school in the week at a variety of locations, or Saturday and Sunday mornings at a lovely premises in St Peters. Assessments and consultations can also be arranged for during school hours. Get in touch | 07797 776 613 | [email protected]
If you are interested in any of our services and wish to make an enquiry, please do so knowing it will be dealt with in the strictest confidence and with no obligation to book in. We would be delighted to hear from you and look forward to helping in any way we can. If you yourself happen to be a teacher or tutor who would be interested in hearing more about how you and Core Learning can work together, please reach out too! We'd be delighted to hear from you as there will always be room for highly skilled, highly motivated personnel who really want to support children and their families along their educational pathways. PS As well as tutoring and consulting, Chris works in the school holidays at Earth Kids with Nurture Ecology, providing week long activity camps based in the great outdoors of St Ouens bay. Earth Kids
We believe that outdoor play and exploration is essential for kids’ development and growth…but that often children lack this sense of adventure, wonder and freedom in today’s modern world.

Are you an exceptional educational practitioner, passionate about identifying pupil needs and working with them?
Core Learning is looking for teachers to join the team offering 1 to 1 tutoring in English, maths and sciences.
Whether you are new to the teaching career or vastly experienced, I am looking for practitioners who have the patience, creativity and energy to support pupils in overcoming anxieties and difficulties in their learning.
Our starting point is always working with a pupil’s confidence and self esteem, giving them ownership of their learning journey. Our approach is focused and friendly, breaking learning down into manageable pieces in fun, engaging ways to work on the core learning a pupil requires.
If you are dependable and would enjoy working in a small, thoughtful team out of school hours and are interested in finding out more, please get in touch!
Minister for Children and Education, Deputy Inna Gardiner, joined over 60 Emotional Literacy Support Assistants, known as ELSAs, at Highlands College last week for their annual conference. They met to continue their professional development and celebrate the graduation of 23 newly qualified ELSAs.
ELSAs work in both primary and secondary schools around the island to support the emotional wellbeing of pupils. They provide individual and group student sessions who need support with emotional literacy, mental health, social skills, and emotional wellbeing. This includes students with special educational needs or disabilities, or students who are experiencing bereavement or other challenges. There are now 100 ELSAs in Jersey.
Minister for Children and Education, Deputy Inna Gardiner, said: "ELSAs are a vital part of the whole network of mental health support available for children and young people."

Core Learning offers three services presently, all geared towards supporting your son or daughter through their journey in education.
We are a small team of Primary trained tutors, with varied yet complimentary skill sets. We provide one to one tutoring to help address a pupil's learning misconceptions and fill gaps in their knowledge. We work in a safe and supportive environment, uncovering areas of uncertainty and addressing them at the right pace for the pupil.
Secondly, we also provide sessions specifically to support preparation for entrance exams and school based assessments, such as PUMA, PIRA and the 11+, where scores benefit from the implementation of useful exam techniques along with confidence building.
Thirdly, we offer a consultation service for parents wishing to discuss their son or daughter's educational needs, often in the light of accompanying diagnosis or difficulties experienced with their schooling. This service has the aim of improving the support network around you and your child by opening doors to resources and services that will be of benefit to them and their education.
A pupil's time at school is fast and fantastic but they can all too easily be left behind in their understanding for a myriad of reasons.
Core Learning aims to help regain lost ground academically, enhance a pupil's confidence and boost their self-esteem, whilst providing clearer pathways for parents to follow to maximise their time and efforts too. All of which has the ultimate aim of making your son or daughter's future lessons at school easier to access and more valuable to them.
Get in touch to see how we can help your son or daughter in their academic studies and personal development as learners.
My good friend and wonderful lady, Wendy Jenkins, is running a brilliant new art course this April. See below for her details:
‘Create with Confidence’ is a 6 weeks course written and designed by Wendy Jenkins, a self-taught artist and therapeutic art specialist for anyone wishing to develop confidence in their art making.
Absolutely NO previous experience needed…Just an inward tug to want to start creating!
The six week course starts Thursday 28 April 7pm - 9pm at St Andrews Community Centre, Mont Cochon, JE2 3JA
The course will cover: common creative blocks, building resilience, tuning in to your inner child and the importance of play, and why creativity can support good mental health.
But most of all, there will be plenty of opportunity to just make art in a safe, supportive and nurturing environment.
Price: £90 (half price introductory offer - usually £180)
