Henry, the world's oldest known crocodile, had his 124th birthday in December 2024 at the Crocworld Conservation Centre in South Africa.

Originally captured in Botswana’s Okavango Delta in 1903, the massive Nile crocodile has spent nearly four decades at Crocworld, where he has fathered over 10,000 offspring.

In one of the rarest biological phenomena ever documented, a 19-year-old woman from Mineiros, Brazil, gave birth to twin boys who share the same mother but have different fathers. Doctors identified the unusual case after DNA testing revealed that one baby matched the presumed father, while the other did not. A second paternity test involving another man confirmed the astonishing truth — both babies were conceived during the same ovulation cycle but by two different men.

This rare occurrence is known as Heteropaternal Superfecundation, and only a few dozen verified cases exist worldwide. It happens when two eggs are released during ovulation and are fertilized by s***m from separate partners within a short window of time — typically 24 hours. The resulting twins are technically half-siblings who develop simultaneously in the same womb.

While this phenomenon has been scientifically recognized for decades, it remains exceptionally uncommon in humans. Experts note that it’s more frequently observed in animals like cats and dogs. The northern white rhinoceros has reached the point of being declared functionally extinct. According to Yale Environment 360, the last known male, named Sudan, died in 2018 at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. His death left behind only two females, Najin and her daughter Fatu, who are still alive today under 24 hour armed guard. With no surviving males, natural reproduction is no longer possible for the subspecies.

According to Saving Private Rhino, the northern white rhino once roamed across central Africa in large numbers, but decades of poaching for horns and habitat loss reduced the population to just a handful. The loss of Sudan marked the end of any chance for the species to recover on its own. Scientists now describe the subspecies as functionally extinct, meaning it cannot survive without human intervention.

Despite this, conservationists have not given up. According to Exploring Animals, researchers are working on advanced reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization and stem cell research. Eggs have been harvested from Najin and Fatu, and frozen s***m from deceased males is being used to create embryos. These embryos are intended to be implanted into surrogate southern white rhinos, a closely related subspecies that is still relatively numerous.

As of today, Najin and Fatu remain at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, living under constant protection. Their survival is a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of human activity on wildlife, but also of the extraordinary lengths science and conservation are going to in order to prevent total extinction.

A true experiment that still haunts scientists today.

In the late 1960s, American ethologist Dr. John B. Calhoun built what he called a “Mouse Paradise” — a perfectly controlled world with unlimited food, water, and shelter.
No predators. No scarcity. No fear.
Only abundance.

At first, it was heaven. The mice thrived, multiplied, and built their tiny cities. But when their population swelled past 600, something began to unravel.

The strong claimed the best nesting areas.
Weaker males were bullied into corners.
Mothers stopped caring for their young — some even turned against them.
Violence erupted. Mating ceased.
And gradually, the colony lost its will to live.

Though the food never ran out, purpose did.

The final generations grew passive and detached — grooming endlessly, avoiding contact, showing no interest in survival or connection. Calhoun called this stage “the behavioral sink” — a collapse not of body, but of spirit.

When the last mouse died, the habitat still overflowed with everything they could ever need.

Calhoun repeated this experiment 25 times, and every time, the outcome was the same.
His conclusion echoed far beyond the cages:

> “When a population loses purpose, meaning, and social bonds — it dies long before its body does.”

We are familiar with some solid shapes right? For example, square, rectangle, triangle, cylinder and the likes.
This shape was however discovered in our cells (human cells) and it is called SCUTOID.
Mathematically, a scutoid is defined as a solid between two parallel planes whose end boundaries are polygons (or near‐polygons) and whose side faces may include curved surfaces or “Y-junctions.”
This is not a brand-new geometric class in the sense of pure mathematics, but a new biological cell shape that helps explain how tissues curve and pack together in 3D.
In 2018, researchers studying how epithelial (surface-lining) cells pack together discovered that when tissues curve, cells don’t always stay as simple prisms or columns. Instead, they adopt a more complex shape, which the team named the scutoid.
The scutoid is a kind of three-dimensional shape that bridges two roughly parallel surfaces, but with a twist: one of the lateral edges has a “Y-shaped” junction or vertex in the midsection, allowing the top and bottom faces to differ in their polygonal structure.
In effect, the scutoid lets cells change neighbors along their height, which helps the tissue bend without leaving gaps or excessive stress.
Experimental evidence shows scutoid‐shaped epithelial cells in animals like fruit flies and zebrafish, especially in regions where the tissue is curved.

The use of "am" & "have" in comparison with "I'm" and "I've"

It's been discovered that nowadays a lot of people do not know the difference between "am" and "I'm" and as such they commit silly blunders in their writings.

Now, "I'm" means 'I am' and can be used to begin a sentence. For instance, I'm done, or I'm coming. However, "am" cannot be used this way. So it is wrong to write 'am done' or 'am coming'. "Am" cannot begin a sentence unless a question is being asked. For instance, "am I wrong?" or "am I at fault"?

In the same vein, "have" can also not be used to start a sentence unless a question is being asked. For example, it is wrong to write "have done it" or "have finished the job". (Sadly so many people commit this error). Instead,
write "I've done it" which means 'I have done it' and "I've finished the job" which also means 'I have finished the job'.

Lab grown mini organs with blood vessels; the latest scienfic breakthrough

Researchers at University of North Texas (in collaboration with Stanford University) have succeeded in growing mini-organs (organoids) of the heart and liver that include their own network of blood vessels.
This is such an important scientific breakthrough because most organoids previously lacked vasculature, limiting their size, maturity and how well they simulate real organs. With built-in vessels, these mini-organs are much closer to realistic models for disease research and drug testing. It opens the path toward creating full-scale engineered organs or highly accurate models for complex human biology.
However, these are still “mini-organs” not full size functional organs ready for transplantation. Ensuring proper integration, function long-term, immune compatibility etc remain major challenges and as such scaling up, cost reduction and translation to human therapies will take time.

The volcano snail, also known as the scaly-foot gastropod (Chrysomallon squamiferum), is one of the most extraordinary animals on Earth and it lives in one of the harshest environments imaginable.
It lives deep in the Indian Ocean, around hydrothermal vents (volcano-like openings on the ocean floor that release superheated, mineral-rich water).These vents reach temperatures above 350°C (662°F). In other words, you can put this snail in your oven at the highest temperature and it will still feel right at home.
The snail survives in complete darkness and toxic conditions that would kill most life forms and it is the only known animal that uses iron in its skeleton and shell.
Its shell has three layers: An Inner layer: made of aragonite (like most shells), the middle layer: organic material that absorbs impact and an outer layer: coated with iron sulfide minerals (greigite and pyrite, also known as “fool’s gold”).This makes it incredibly tough — like having built-in metal armor.
It doesn’t eat plants or animals. Instead, it relies on symbiotic bacteria that live in a special organ called the esophageal gland.These bacteria use chemicals from the vent fluids (like hydrogen sulfide) to produce food — a process called chemosynthesis. Essentially, the snail farms bacteria inside its body for nourishment.
It grows up to 3–4 cm (1.5 inches) long, relatively big for a deep-sea snail.

Scientists are studying its shell structure for biomimicry — to design stronger armor, coatings, and materials for human use.
