The GSSI - Gran Sasso Science Institute aims to create a new center of scientific excellence in L’Aquila fostering the skills and highly specialized structures already present in the area, such as the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) and the University of L'Aquila, facilitating the attraction of high-level resources in the fields of natural and social sciences. The GSSI is a project supported by OECD, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. It has been instituted as a new Italian graduate school in 2016, after a three-years experimental period guided by the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) with the collaboration of top educational institutions: International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste for the programs in Physics and Mathematics, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa for the program in Social Science and the Institutions Markets Technologies (IMT) of Lucca for Computer Science.

Il GSSI - Gran Sasso Science Institute vuole realizzare all’Aquila un nuovo polo di eccellenza scientifica grazie anche alla valorizzazione di competenze e strutture altamente specializzate già presenti nel territorio, come i Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso dell’Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) e l’Università dell’Aquila, e di favorire l’attrazione di risorse di alto livello nel campo delle scienze di base e dell’intermediazione tra ricerca e impresa. Il GSSI è un progetto sostenuto dall’OCSE, l’Organizzazione per la Cooperazione e lo Sviluppo Economico. È stato istituito come una Scuola Universitaria Superiore nel 2016, al termine di un triennio sperimentale guidato dall’Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) in collaborazione con prestigiosi istituti di istruzione post-universitaria quali la SISSA - Scuola Superiore di Studi Avanzati di Trieste per la Fisica e la Matematica, la Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa per le Scienze Sociali e la Scuola IMT Alti Studi Lucca per l’Informatica.

On October 15-16, 2026, the GSSI will host RV60 – Fluid Dynamics from Earth to Heart, an international fluid dynamics conference, co-organized by the GSSI and the University of Rome Tor Vergata.

The conference will be an occasion to celebrate the 60th birthday of Professor Roberto Verzicco. The programme is focused on Professor's Verzicco main research areas, including turbulence and thermal convection, geophysical and environmental flows, and the modelling of cardiovascular flows and the human heart.

Francis Halzen, Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA) and member of the Scientific Committee of the GSSI – Gran Sasso Science Institute, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics, "for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin".

Professor Halzen is part of the scientific community of Gran Sasso Science Institute, being a member of the committee overseeing the scientific activities of the GSSI.

Halzen is the mind behind the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica, the world's biggest neutrino detector, and the first one to ever catch high-energy neutrinos coming from deep space. Conceived by Halzen in the Eighties and operational since 2010, IceCube's scientific program continues to expand, with the collaboration now including more than 450 researchers from institutions in 14 countries, including the GSSI.

Under the sky of Gran Sasso 🌌

Researchers from GSSI joined forces with CAI Giovani L'Aquila for a very special night of astronomy at Rifugio Garibaldi, a remote mountain shelter at 2.200 m, at the foot of the highest peaks of Gran Sasso.

With a crystal-clear sky above them, the 20 participants had the chance to explore the night sky through a telescope, spotting the Andromeda Galaxy, the Hercules Cluster, Epsilon Lyrae, the Veil Nebula, and many other fascinating celestial objects. The astronomical observations were led by GSSI researcher Filippo Santoliquido, who guided the group through the wonders of the Universe.

Despite temperatures well below zero, the evening continued with hours of questions and discussion about black holes, gravitational waves, and many other topics in astrophysics.

Leading researchers in mathematics will gather at GSSI to celebrate Professor Nicola Guglielmi on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

Taking place on October 8-10, 2026, the NIC60 international conference will focus on the main research areas that have shaped Professor Guglielmi's scientific activity. The program will consists entirely of invited talks.

«I don't like apocalyptic rhetoric: one can also imagine that we'll use AI to free ourselves from that part of work that has so far stifled our imagination».

GSSI Professor Camillo De Lellis is amongst the nine world-class mathematicians named in the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, an independent committee who will advise AI companies on their interactions with mathematical research, based at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton).
