A BIT ABOUT ME
Before teaching English in Italy, I worked in Museum Education in London. I loved helping children discover the past through hands-on activities. But the most important thing? To develop life skills and inspire a love of learning. Teaching English is the same. My approach is interactive, inclusive, student-centred, and full of fun and challenges. I want children – and teachers – to enjoy learning, and for me its about much more than learning a language.

The more I think about it, the more convinced I've become that teachers don't need another thing to learn before September.

They need a little space.

A chance to use English to think about their teaching before the busy term begins.
That's what I've been creating over the summer.

And I'm really looking forward to sharing it with you next week.

There's something I love about these last few days of August.

September is close enough that we start thinking about the new school year, but there's still a little breathing space before everything begins again.

Maybe you're planning lessons.
Maybe you're organising your classroom.
Or maybe you're still making the most of the holidays (I hope so!).

Either way, I wonder...
When was the last time you used English for yourself as a teacher?

Not just to teach your students or prepare a lesson.

Just to think.
To reflect.
To reconnect with your teaching ideas.

We spend so much time using English for our students that we sometimes forget what it's like to use it for ourselves.

I wonder what a difference it would make if we gave ourselves a little space before September begins.

But sometimes it's worth looking back first.

Think of one lesson from this year that has stayed with you. Not necessarily your best or worst lesson.

Sometimes the most useful thing isn't more planning time.

It's a few minutes to let the ideas you already have catch up with you.

Earlier this year I started the Transform English Project - a fluency space for
teachers- and I thought the biggest benefit would be giving teachers a chance to use English together.

And that was definitely valuable.

But during the feedback conversations afterwards, something else kept coming up.

Teachers talked about having permission to stop for a moment, to think about a lesson, hear how someone else would have approached it and realise they weren't the only one thinking or feeling something.

One teacher said that during a normal school week they might reflect on a lesson for a minute or two before rushing on to the next thing.

But making time to really think about it - and talk about it with other teachers -made a much bigger difference than they'd expected.

I don't think that surprised me at the time, because I realised that's what I valued too.

Not just speaking English.
Creating a little space to stop and think.

A teacher said something during one of our conversations this summer that I keep coming back to.

"I've got all these good ideas... so why aren't I actually using them?"

I think most of us know that feeling.

A workshop reminds you of something you'd forgotten.

You see another teacher doing something you'd meant to try.

You read an article and think, Yes!

And then Monday arrives.

It's rarely about not having enough ideas.

More often, it's that we don't get enough opportunities to stop, join the dots and think... actually... I could use that here.

That's one of the reasons I enjoy talking to other teachers so much.

Not because I always come away with something completely new.

Sometimes it's just the reminder I needed.

This time of year is worth pausing in, before September takes over.

Not to judge what went well or badly last year.

Just to notice and think about the bigger picture.

The lessons that stay with us - the ones that went unexpectedly well, or didn't work the way we thought they would - usually have something in them worth carrying forward.

Think of one lesson that keeps coming back to you.
