Last year’s World Champion of Public Speaking didn’t start on a world stage.

In 2025, the World Champion of Public Speaking was Sabyasachi Sengupta — a behavioral change expert, author, and professional speaker.

Before the international stage, before the applause, before the title, there was a club contest.

Toastmasters competitions are not about being “born a great speaker.” They are about stepping into a system that helps you grow, level by level.

Club. Area. Division. District. International.

On February 24, our club is hosting its Club Speech Contest — the very first step of that journey.

You don’t have to see yourself as a future world champion. You only need to be willing to start where everyone starts.

Because every big stage begins with one decision.

What happens when students are invited to speak — instead of being asked to listen?

At the Liceo Copernico-Pasoli, a workshop turned the usual school setting into a space for dialogue, ideas and public speaking practice — in English.

The initiative,
“Express yourself effectively: Words of Respect – World Café,”
is now in its fourth consecutive year and is promoted by Inner Wheel Club Verona Bee Lab and Verona Toastmasters Club as part of the PCTO (Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e per l’Orientamento).

This is not a traditional lesson.
It is an experiential laboratory.

At the core of the workshop is the World Café method:
students work in small thematic groups, guided by trained volunteers from Inner Wheel and Toastmasters, exploring the concept of Words of Respect from a personal, social and global perspective.

At the end of the activity, each group prepares and delivers a short speech to the audience, experimenting with structured public speaking techniques in English.

As Massimo Dal Corso, President of Verona Toastmasters Club, explains:

“Il World Café è uno strumento semplice ma estremamente efficace per attivare conversazioni autentiche e costruttive.”

This project is built on a shared belief:
communication, leadership and mastery of English are not optional skills, but essential tools for the growth and empowerment of younger generations.

✨ “A new year doesn’t ask you to become someone else.
It simply gives you more space to be yourself.”

As this year comes to a close, we’re not counting speeches or roles.
We’re remembering moments —
shared laughter, thoughtful pauses, brave ideas, and quiet growth.

At Verona Toastmasters, everyone moves at their own rhythm.
Some speak.
Some listen.
Some discover their voice slowly — and that’s perfectly fine.

As Mark Twain once said:

“The right word may be effective, but no word was ever as effective as a rightly timed pause.”

May the new year bring you clarity, confidence,
and the right moments — to speak, to listen, and to simply be present.

🎉 Happy New Year from all of us at Verona Toastmasters.
We’re grateful to share this journey with you.

wipe ⬆️ to meet the TEDx stage our Toastmasters have helped build.

At Verona Toastmasters, we don’t just teach speeches —
we build speakers, thinkers, and leaders who go beyond the club room.

This year, one of our members, Anna Laura Migliorati, took the TEDxVerona stage with a powerful talk titled:
“Grande Muraglia Verde: la VOCE che può far fiorire un deserto”
(Watch the full talk here: https://youtu.be/m7DCEFT0elg)

Her talk explores the Great Green Wall project and the role of voice, communication, and collective action in stopping the spread of the Sahara — showing how ideas, when clearly expressed, can drive real change.

But this is not just a speech — it’s the result of a process.

Behind every TEDx talk there is work on clarity, structure, emotional precision, and presence.
That’s exactly what we practice together, week after week, at Verona Toastmasters:

• refining ideas until they resonate
• shaping words to carry meaning
• building confidence to speak with impact
• and coaching others to do the same

And that’s not all — many of our members also serve as coaches for TEDx speakers, helping transform complex ideas into messages that travel far.

✨ Because Verona Toastmasters is where speakers are built —
and where ideas learn how to move people.
