There’s a good chance you’re using your salad spinner the wrong way. 😲
When I’m teaching cooking classes, I see people do this all the time:
They put their greens into the strainer basket, put the basket into the salad spinner, fill it with water…
…and then spin.
The problem?
The dirt, grit and dust you’re trying to remove JUST stay trapped right there with the leaves.
Here’s a much better way to wash leafy greens:
1. Take the strainer OUT of the salad spinner bowl and fill it up with your greens.
2. Fill the bowl with cool water, to about an inch from the top.
3. Put the greens into the water so they have plenty of room to float freely.
4. A handful at a time, swish the greens in the water, lift them out, and put them in the strainer basket.
5. Dump the dirty water — and rinse out any grit if there’s a lot left in the bottom — then put the strainer basket back into the spinner and spin the greens dry.
If your greens are especially dirty or gritty, just repeat the washing step before spinning.
This works for pretty much any leafy green — kale, collards, Swiss chard, mustard greens, spinach, lettuce… you name it.
It’s such a SIMPLE technique, but learning how to properly wash and dry greens makes prep a lot faster and a lot easier.
