Track 4 | Technology, AI and food planning
The fourth track offers a critical perspective on the role of technology, digitalisation and artificial intelligence in food systems.
It questions the spatial, social and political implications of innovation: who benefits from new technologies? Who is excluded? What forms of dependency, control or empowerment may emerge?

Track 3 | Food governance and the right to food
The third track addresses the relationship between food governance, socio-environmental justice and the right to food.
It invites reflections on how needs, rights and alliances are shaped in space, especially in contexts marked by social vulnerability, inequalities, climate pressures and political transformations.

La terza traccia affronta il rapporto tra governance alimentare, giustizia socio-ambientale e diritto al cibo.
Invita a riflettere su come bisogni, diritti e alleanze si costruiscano nello spazio, soprattutto nei contesti attraversati da vulnerabilità sociali, disuguaglianze, pressioni climatiche e trasformazioni politiche.

Track 2 | Food urbanism in fragile territories
The second track investigates the relationship between food landscapes, design and spatial practices in fragile territories.
From production to distribution and consumption, it explores how design and planning approaches can support more resilient, inclusive and sustainable food systems.

La seconda traccia indaga il rapporto tra paesaggi del cibo, design e pratiche spaziali nei territori fragili.

Track 1 | Land, soil and water
The first track of the XII AESOP Sustainable Food Planning Conference explores the multiple values of land, soil and water in planning practices.
In a context of increasing competition over natural resources, it invites reflections on land access, property regimes, commons and the relationships between food systems, ecosystems and spatial planning.

La prima traccia della XII AESOP Sustainable Food Planning Conference esplora i molteplici valori di terra, suolo e acqua nelle pratiche di pianificazione.
In un contesto di crescente competizione per le risorse naturali, invita a riflettere su accesso alla terra, regimi di proprietà, commons e relazioni tra sistemi alimentari, ecosistemi e pianificazione spaziale.

AT.3 | Formare
Iuav Food Lab sostiene la formazione di studenti, ricercatori e professionisti attraverso tesi di laurea, tirocini di ricerca, dottorati e cicli di lezioni. Le ricerche di dottorato affrontano temi come paesaggi del grano, politiche agricole, materiali biobased, cura del paesaggio e valorizzazione degli scarti agroalimentari. Un’attività formativa che connette ricerca, progetto e sistemi alimentari, aprendo nuovi sguardi sulle transizioni territoriali ed ecologiche.

AT.3 | Education and training
Iuav Food Lab supports the training of students, researchers and professionals through thesis projects, research internships, PhDs and lecture series. PhD research addresses topics such as wheat landscapes, agricultural policies, biobased materials, landscape care and the valorisation of agri-food waste. A training activity that connects research, design and food systems, opening new perspectives on territorial and ecological transitions.

AT.2 | Divulgare e costruire reti
Iuav Food Lab promuove attività di divulgazione scientifica attraverso conferenze, seminari, workshop ed eventi pubblici. Tra le attività: il ciclo Road to AESOP 2026 – Food Conversation, la conferenza Cibo in Rete e l’organizzazione della AESOP Sustainable Food Planning Conference 2026 in Venice. Occasioni di confronto per condividere conoscenze, attivare dialoghi interdisciplinari e costruire reti tra ricerca, istituzioni e territori.

AT.2 | Dissemination and networking
Iuav Food Lab promotes scientific dissemination through conferences, seminars, workshops and public events. Activities include the Road to AESOP 2026 – Food Conversation series, the Cibo in Rete conference and the organisation of the AESOP Sustainable Food Planning Conference 2026 in Venice. Opportunities to share knowledge, foster interdisciplinary dialogue and build networks between research, institutions and territories.

AT.1 | Ricercare e analizzare
Le attività di ricerca di Iuav Food Lab esplorano il rapporto tra cibo, territorio, paesaggio e comunità locali. Dalla patrimonializzazione agroalimentare allo sviluppo locale, dal design sostenibile per la ristorazione collettiva all’Atlante del Cibo della Laguna di Venezia, il laboratorio indaga filiere, impatti e potenzialità dei sistemi alimentari. Un lavoro multidisciplinare per leggere il cibo come infrastruttura territoriale, culturale e ambientale.

AT.1 | Research and analysis
Iuav Food Lab research activities explore the relationship between food, territory, landscape and local communities. From agri-food heritage and local development to sustainable design for collective catering and the Food Atlas of the Venice Lagoon, the lab investigates supply chains, impacts and potentials of food systems. A multidisciplinary approach to understanding food as a territorial, cultural and environmental infrastructure.

Le Traiettorie di ricerca di Iuav Food Lab compongono una mappa di lavoro sul cibo come sistema complesso, capace di connettere città, territori, politiche, filiere, risorse, prodotti e patrimoni. Dalla lettura degli spazi urbani alla governance alimentare, dalle relazioni socio-ecologiche alla biodiversità, fino ai cicli di vita dei prodotti e alle identità territoriali: sei direzioni di ricerca per comprendere le trasformazioni dei sistemi alimentari e progettare transizioni più sostenibili, eque e consapevoli.

The Research Trajectories of Iuav Food Lab outline a working map of food as a complex system, connecting cities, territories, policies, supply chains, resources, products and heritage. From urban spaces to food governance, from socio-ecological relations to biodiversity, through product life cycles and territorial identities: six research directions to understand the transformation of food systems and design more sustainable, equitable and conscious transitions.

We continue introducing the keynote voices of the XII International Conference on Sustainable Food Planning – AESOP-SFP 2026, an international event that Iuav Food Lab is helping bring to Venice.
Our third keynote speaker is Kevin Morgan, Professor of Governance and Development at Cardiff University and a leading figure in sustainable food policy. His research focuses on public food provisioning, urban food strategies and community food planning, with particular attention to how schools, hospitals, prisons and public institutions can become drivers of change.
Author of Serving the Public: the good food revolution in schools, hospitals and prisons, Morgan is also part of the research consortium of the School Meals Coalition, a UN-sponsored network working to provide every child in the world with a nutritious school meal by 2030.

Il terzo keynote speaker è Kevin Morgan, Professor of Governance and Development alla Cardiff University e figura centrale nel campo delle politiche alimentari sostenibili. For the next posts, Iuav Food Lab is slightly shifting its usual rhythm: alongside the visual identity and research work of our group, we are introducing the voices that will shape the XII International Conference on Sustainable Food Planning – AESOP-SFP 2026, which we are organising in Venice.
Our second keynote speaker is Kami Pothukuchi, Distinguished Service Professor of Urban Studies and Planning at Wayne State University. Her work has played a foundational role in shaping the field of community food system planning, connecting urban planning, social justice, sustainability, local economies and food access.
Through her research in Detroit, Pothukuchi has addressed issues such as access to vacant land for urban growers, supermarkets in underserved neighbourhoods, community food systems, and the role of universities in building more just and sustainable food systems.

Il profilo di Iuav Food Lab cambia per qualche post il suo ritmo abituale: oltre a raccontare il nostro gruppo di ricerca, iniziamo a presentarvi le voci che animeranno la XII International Conference on Sustainable Food Planning – AESOP-SFP 2026, che stiamo organizzando a Venezia.
La seconda keynote speaker è Kami Pothukuchi, Distinguished Service Professor of Urban Studies and Planning alla Wayne State University. Il suo lavoro ha contribuito in modo fondamentale alla costruzione del campo del community food system planning, mettendo in relazione pianificazione urbana, giustizia sociale, sostenibilità, economie locali e accesso al cibo.
A partire dalla sua ricerca a Detroit, Pothukuchi ha lavorato su temi come l’accesso alla terra per coltivatori urbani, i supermercati nei quartieri meno serviti, i sistemi alimentari di comunità e il ruolo delle università nella costruzione di food systems più giusti e sostenibili.
