On August 19, 2003, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad killed 22 humanitarian aid workers, including the UN Special Representative Sergio Vieira de Mello. Five years later, the United Nations General Assembly designated this date as World Humanitarian Day.

Today, it is estimated that more than 500 million children live in or are fleeing conflict zones, and climate-related crises continue to affect tens of millions of individuals. Facing a struggling humanitarian system, the United Nations is calling to act for humanity and concretely fund aid, especially to support those who intervene at the local level.

At Change the World Academy, education for peace and cooperation is at the center of our work. On a day like today, more than ever, we support the efforts of those working on the ground who never give up.

The Middle East is in flames, and Saudi Arabia finds itself literally encircled. After October 7, 2023, Israel's brutal response against Hamas made it politically impossible for Riyadh to sign the Abraham Accords. Today, in a region engulfed by a state of war, the Kingdom must manage threats on all four cardinal points:

- South: tensions with the Houthis have flared up again, forcing Saudi forces to face aerial threats and a "declared" naval blockade in the Red Sea.
- North: in Iraq, several Shiite militias have continued to attack US and Saudi forces under Iranian direction.
- West: on the other side of the Red Sea, in Sudan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are fighting a proxy war to secure access and influence.
- East: Iran and the threat of a closure of the Strait of Hormuz remain a constant danger, exacerbated by the shortage of interceptors for air defense.
In this explosive scenario, the United States is raising the stakes. President Trump is trying to force the country to sign the accords, threatening to blow up the much-desired civil nuclear pact if Riyadh does not normalize relations with Jerusalem.

In 1724, the mysterious Captain Charles Johnson wrote: "The Sea is wide enough for us all... Its Stores are infinite".

Three centuries later, we know he was wrong. The myth of the adventurous pirate has given way to a much more complex reality. In our July newsletter, we analyzed the return of piracy in the Gulf of Aden: a phenomenon triggered by economic collapse, illegal fishing, and smuggling networks linking Somali clans to arms trafficking towards Yemen.

Today, with NATO focused on territorial defense and fleets engaged elsewhere, pirates are returning to less guarded waters, proving that the underlying logic has never changed: desperate sailors whose only option is the sea. But a sea that is now depleted and geopolitically fragmented.
