The monitoring season has come to an end with the final 2026 📹 survey to monitor the glacier conditions and to estimate its annual mass balance!! 🏔️

😔 This year’s surveys were a sad one: the glacier has visibly shrunk. We now look forward to processing the collected data to get a clearer diagnosis of its current state... stay tuned! 📊

🎉 From research to an open-source tool: 𝙃𝙮𝙙𝙧𝙤𝙂𝙚𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 𝙏𝙤𝙤𝙡𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙌𝙂𝙄𝙎 is now officially available on the QGIS Plugin Repository: https://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/inest/

Developed by HydroLab - DI4A Uniud - Università degli Studi di Udine with the Hydrogeomorphology Research Group of the CNR and Alberto De Luca, the plugin provides an open-source suite of tools to support hydrological and geomorphological analyses and watershed management planning in mountain basins. 🌍💧

🛠️ 𝙃𝙮𝙙𝙧𝙤𝙂𝙚𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 𝙏𝙤𝙤𝙡𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙌𝙂𝙄𝙎 bring together functionalities for geomorphological analyses and hydrological modelling, sediment connectivity assessment, multi-temporal DTM processing, and the management of torrent control structures databases, enabling standardized and reproducible workflows directly within QGIS.

The plugin was developed within the iNEST – Interconnected Nord-Est Innovation Ecosystem, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, and co-financed by the Interreg VI-A Italy–Slovenia TORRENT project – Best common pracTices for risk reductiOn in toRRent watErshed management. 🤝

🏔️ Last week, a highly successful closing conference in Tolmezzo for the TORRENT project 🌐 www.ita-slo.eu/torrent with the HydroLab UNIUD team at Università degli Studi di Udine – DI4A Uniud, in partnership with Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, Regionalni razvojni center Koper and Univerza v Ljubljani / University of Ljubljana

The debate was rich of discussions on the geo-hydrological risk along mountain torrents — and the role of the torrent control structures. Exactly the kind of conversation this project was built for! 💧🌲

A big thank you to the Comunità di montagna della Carnia for hosting the event, and to all our project partners for the amazing work done together over these years. The results speak for themselves! 🙌

But this isn't goodbye — the collaboration goes on! 🤝
