“Read together, they invite our field into territory it has long approached with caution, and they do so with warmth, courage, and care.” In a new article by A. Sari van Poelje, this praise is directed at two papers by Edward T. Novak, who recently received the 2026 Eric Berne Memorial Award (EBMA). The publications constitute a major theoretical and practical advance to Transactional Analysis (TA), effectively extending the methodology from a psychology of two minds to a psychology of two bodies.

The honored works, "Secret Garden Work" and "A Model of Informed Physical Contact in Psychotherapy," carefully build upon foundational TA materials such as contracting, script and ego states. According to the author, Novak provides a teachable map for integrating physical contact into practice by offering four distinct categories of touch that range from brief social contact to sustained, body-psychotherapy-informed work. This approach establishes a structured, ethical framework for engaging the physical self with transparency and consent, allowing therapists to help clients compare past trauma with present safety.

By drawing a careful line between unconscious enactment and informed contact, this contribution restores the moral agency of the therapist and helps the field process its historical wounds around the body. As the article's author states, the EBMA committee ultimately celebrates a contribution that returns the living body to the heart of clinical practice, providing practitioners with a language that is precise and deeply humane.
