PhD Position in Statistics at the University of Geneva

They are seeking a motivated PhD student to join the Research Institute for Statistics and Information Science at the University of Geneva for a PhD in Statistics, starting February 1st 2027 under the supervision of Dr. Shahin Tavakoli (https://stavakoli.com/)

Research Focus
The project lies at the intersection of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, functional data analysis and functional regression.

Requirements
• The candidate should hold an MSc in mathematics, statistics or related field, with a strong background in mathematics.
• French proficiency at CEFR B2 or equivalent (required for teaching duties).
• Strong analytical skills, and ability to work independently.

L’attività di ricerca che il titolare dell’incarico post-doc sarà chiamato a svolgere si concentrerà sullo sviluppo e sull’applicazione di metodologie bayesiane non parametriche per l’analisi di dati complessi, con particolare riferimento a strutture spazio-temporali, dati ad alta dimensionalità (quali immagini biomediche) e dati gerarchici o innestati.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Process Optimisation for Drug Manufacturing

Post Summary
The successful applicant will collaborate within a skilled and motivated team of scientists dedicated to the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods for process optimisation of manufacturing parameters in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Roller compaction is a dry granulation process widely used in pharmaceutical manufacturing to improve powder flowability, bulk density, and content uniformity while avoiding the use of solvents and drying steps. In this process, a powder blend is continuously fed between two counter-rotating rollers, where it is compressed into a dense ribbon or sheet. The compacted ribbon is subsequently milled to produce granules with desired size and flow characteristics for downstream processing such as tableting or capsule filling. The project aims to optimise the roller compactor process parameters for different material property inputs in order to achieve the desired ribbon quality metrics using AI-based optimisation.
The postdoc will conduct research that contributes to three of the following streams of work
1) define “user needs, goals, procedures” for AI-based process optimisation (in particular focusing on Bayesian Optimisation (BO)) of the roller compactor process parameters; 2) implement BO-based strategies and software tools to be able to apply these methods to the process optimisation of the the roller compactor process parameters (using GPytorch, BOtorch); 3) test and evaluate the solution on a real manufacturing process.
The position will be under the direction of Assoc. Prof. Alessio Benavoli, Prof. Anne Marie Healy and Assoc. Prof. Deirdre D’Arcy from TCD and a pharmaceutical industry partner. For informal inquiries please contact [email protected]

Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a PhD in Computer Engineering/Science, Statistics, Biostatistics or a related field. The post is applicable to both new and experienced PhD holders, and salary will be commensurate with experience and achievements.
Essential Knowledge & Experience (1) Expertise in machine learning and AI; (2) Knowledge of Bayesian Optimisation; (3) Good programming skills; (4) Established track record of publication in leading journals/conferences, on relevant topics; (5) Excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to work well in a group, strong self-motivation and willingness to learn.

Desirable Knowledge & Experience: Experience in one or more of the following areas, is considered is preferable: (1) Knowledge and understanding of pharmaceutical solid dosage form manufacture; (2) Development of AI-based surrogate models for digital-twin; (3)
Industry collaboration.

PhD in Statistics positions available at University College Dublin

Up to 2 PhD in Statistics positions focusing on the development of statistical methods for applications in food and agriculture are available at University College Dublin, starting in September 2026. These are 4-year, full-time positions fully funded by the VistaMilk Research Centre, a leading interdisciplinary collaboration between agri-food, ICT research institutes, and industry partners. The research centre brings together expertise in data science, agriculture, food, sensing, communications, and social sciences, providing a vibrant environment for innovative research.

The PhD research programme will focus on the development of innovative statistical and chemometric methods for agri-food infrared spectrometry data, aiming to predict food traits and outcomes, offering the opportunity to develop novel statistical methods while working with real-world data and contributing to impactful research in agri-food science. As spectrometry data are high-dimensional and complex, the methods developed will draw on ideas from probabilistic latent variable models, clustering and classification. Delivery of open-source software to facilitate implementation of the developed methods by agri-food practitioners is also anticipated. Supervision will be provided by Professor Brendan Murphy and Professor Claire Gormley.

The stipend is €25,000 per year (tax free) for four years, with additional funds for conference travel and a laptop. Tuition fees for Home/EU students are covered automatically, and non-EU students may receive a fee waiver from the respective university. Note that the start date cannot be deferred and so applications without visa restrictions will be prioritised.

Applicants should have or expect to obtain at least a 2.1 honours undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics. Proficiency in statistical modelling is required and experience or interest in probabilistic models, Bayesian inference, and/or statistical computing is advantageous. Experience with statistical computing (e.g., R, Python, C) is required. Strong communication skills are essential. Non-native English speakers must meet UCD's English language requirements.

Data Challenge IFCS 2026

We are pleased to announce the Data Challenge IFCS 2026, an official satellite event of the 19th Conference of the International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS), with the patronage of Cariplo.

During this in-person competition, participants will challenge themselves by working on a complex dataset, containing financial information from nearly 20,000 Italian small and medium-sized enterprises, to address a specific classification problem, simulating a highly analytical professional environment. The dataset and the problem formulation will be revealed to participants on the morning of the event.

Teams may include from two to four members. The contest is addressed specifically to Master's degree and PhD students under the age of 30.

At the end of the day, each team will present its results in a short 5-minute pitch. The proposed solutions will be evaluated by a Scientific Committee based on predictive accuracy, methodological innovation, clarity of presentation, and reproducibility. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams: €1,000 for the first-ranked team, €600 for the second-ranked team, and €400 for the third-ranked team, in the form of Feltrinelli gift vouchers. The winners will be announced during the Icebreaker of the IFCS Conference, ensuring that the best projects gain maximum visibility in front of the international scientific community.
