🌊 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐀𝐫𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲 🏛️🎨

Mediterranean cities represent a continuous dialogue between history, culture, and urban form, where architecture and art shape deeply rooted yet evolving identities.

𝐀𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲:

🏛️ 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐞 — A timeless layer of ancient monuments and imperial heritage
🎨 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐚 — A city defined by artistic imagination and modernist expression
🏺 𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬 — The birthplace of classical architecture and urban philosophy
🕌 𝐈𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐛𝐮𝐥 — A unique blend of Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern influences
🌊 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐚 — A coastal crossroads of civilizations and architectural layers

These cities demonstrate how architecture is not only a physical structure but also a cultural language that preserves memory and expresses identity. Streets, waterfronts, historic centers, and public spaces collectively narrate the story of each city while connecting them within a shared Mediterranean identity.

Art reinforces this relationship by activating urban space—through mosaics, sculpture, murals, and contemporary installations—transforming cities into living cultural environments where past and present coexist.

The Mediterranean remains a powerful bridge of cultures, where cities continue to evolve while preserving their unique architectural and artistic identity.

🏛️ 𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐍 | 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐄𝐒 𝐔𝐑𝐁𝐀𝐍 𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐘 🇮🇹✨

Turin is not simply a city you visit—it is a spatial narrative of power, culture, and transformation, written across centuries of architectural evolution.

As the proud host of 𝐂𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐀 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, Turin becomes a living laboratory of urban identity, where architecture and arts actively construct how a city is seen, felt, and remembered.

✨ 𝐈𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧’𝐬 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲:

🏛️ 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 – An architectural icon of bold ambition and cultural symbolism, dominating the skyline with timeless presence
👑 𝐑𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧 – A monumental expression of dynastic power, elegance, and historical continuity
🎨 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐳𝐳𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐚 – A rare architectural palimpsest where Roman foundations, medieval structure, and baroque layers coexist in one living form
🌄 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐝𝐢 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐚 – A masterpiece where sacred architecture meets landscape, offering one of the most powerful panoramic views over the city

Together, these landmarks reveal Turin as a dynamic dialogue between memory and modernity, where every façade, square, and skyline tells a story of identity in motion.

🌆 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞-𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲

A city is not defined only by its buildings and infrastructure—but by how people experience it in everyday life.

This is where place-making becomes essential. It is the process of transforming public spaces into meaningful, inclusive, and human-centered environments where people connect, interact, and belong. From streets and squares to parks and neighborhoods, place-making brings life into the urban fabric.

When place-making is strong, urban livability naturally improves.

🏙️ How place-making enhances urban livability:
• Activates public spaces with social and cultural life
• Strengthens identity and sense of belonging
• Encourages walking and human-scale mobility
• Improves safety through active, visible environments
• Supports health, comfort, and overall well-being

💡 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬:
Cities are not lived through infrastructure alone—they are lived through places.

These ideas are closely aligned with the upcoming 10th International Conference on Cities’ Identity Through Architecture and Arts - CITAA, where international scholars and practitioners come together to explore how architecture, arts, and urban design shape urban identity and contribute to more livable cities.

Urban growth is shaping the cities of tomorrow—but should progress come at the cost of architectural identity?

Historic streets, iconic landmarks, and cultural landscapes give cities their distinct character. As urban environments continue to expand, preserving these elements becomes essential to maintaining a sense of place and belonging.

The future of urban development lies not in choosing between preservation and innovation—but in connecting them.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞:
🏛️ Protecting architectural landmarks as cultural assets
🌱 Embedding conservation into sustainable urban planning
🔄 Reimagining heritage spaces through adaptive reuse
🤝 Encouraging collaboration between communities, planners, and designers
📍 Creating developments that respect local identity and urban context

Cities that value their architectural heritage build stronger communities, richer experiences, and more resilient urban futures.

Cultural heritage tourism is transforming cities into living cultural landscapes where history is not only preserved but continuously reinterpreted through everyday urban life.

🏛️ Historic environments are revitalized through adaptive reuse and regeneration
🎭 Cultural identity is embedded in daily practices, traditions, and public life
🚶‍♀️ Urban spaces become immersive experiences shaped by memory, meaning, and movement
📱 Digital innovation reveals hidden narratives and new ways of engaging with heritage

This transformation moves beyond preservation toward reinvention, where heritage becomes a catalyst for creativity, sustainability, and urban identity formation.

Cities are no longer static repositories of the past—they are dynamic spaces where memory, culture, and contemporary life intersect.

The urban experience is constantly evolving through the dialogue between people, place, and heritage.

What if city walls could tell stories?

Humanitarian murals and street art are reshaping urban landscapes into powerful expressions of identity, memory, and hope. More than visual interventions, they reflect the voices of communities, celebrate cultural diversity, and reveal the evolving spirit of cities.

By turning ordinary walls into shared narratives, murals transform public spaces into open-air galleries that connect people to place and to each other.

✨ 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲:

🔹 Preserve collective memory and local heritage
🔹 Celebrate cultural diversity and inclusion
🔹 Revitalize public and neglected spaces
🔹 Encourage dialogue and community engagement
🔹 Communicate resilience, hope, and social values
🔹 Strengthen belonging and urban identity

As cities continue to evolve, public art remains a vital force in creating inclusive, meaningful, and human-centered environments—reminding us that urban identity is shaped not only by architecture, but also by people, stories, and culture.
