Politecnico di Torino - Space Robotics The team is working on engineering model and mobility system of lunar and martial rovers.

Team Diana, stands for "Ducti Ingenio Accipimus Naturam Astrorum", and is a group of students of Politecnico di Torino that was born in order to improve and promote space robotics knowledge inside the university. Since 2015 the team started working on an astronaut assistant rover engineering model, with the objective of participating to the Rover Challenge Series Competitions.

BEST PERFORMANCE: SAMPLING — ERC 2026
Sampling is the result of years of development across different departments.
Mechanics worked on the whole sampling chain, starting from the development of the coring system for deep sampling. We also designed the right fingertips for collecting both sand and rocks, together with an onboard system able to weigh the samples reliably.
A big part of the work came from the collaboration between Mechanics and Electronics, especially in the development and integration of the load cells and weighing systems. Software supported the autonomous ex*****on of the task, from approaching and positioning at the sampling site to managing the deposition of the collected sand and communication with the ground station.

BEST PERFORMANCE: MAINTENANCE — ERC 2026
The Maintenance Task challenges the rover to interact with a panel designed for human use, operating switches, selectors and connectors with its robotic arm.
Over the last months, we focused heavily on arm autonomy. First, we had to perfect the low-level controller to achieve the precision needed for reliable autonomous manipulation. Then we worked on the autonomy logic itself: FORTUNA takes a picture of the panel, recognises the elements to operate and estimates their position. Different controls require different approaches, and the system is able to detect errors and correct itself autonomously.
This task was a true collaboration between departments: software for perception and autonomy, control for precise motion, and mechanics for developing the right end-effector and fingertips for each interaction.

Last week, we had the chance to join the DEWESoft Summer Camp 2026 with Lůčã Đï Pãlmã, hosted at the company’s headquarters in Trbovlje, Slovenia 🇸🇮.
An amazing opportunity to meet students from all over the world, share experiences, and get hands-on with measurement, sensors, and data acquisition.
