Blue Skills - OGS Sustainable Blue Economy The Blue Skills project promotes opportunities for marine and maritime careers through capacity buil (MUR).

The project promotes activities such as the Advanced Master and the Summer School in Sustainable Blue Economy, research mobility and traineeship programmes. The project is led by the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics - OGS and is funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research. The project consortium is composed of 12 partners from the western Mediterranean countr

📢There's a new training opportunity for those who want to specialize in marine robotics!

🤝𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 (𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐁𝐋𝐄) is a new curriculum of the Master's Degree in Electrical Energy and Systems Engineering offered by the University of Trieste with the participation of four other European universities.

What is studied:
🤖 Maritime Robotics and Autonomous Systems
🧠 Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
🌊 Oceanography and Marine Environments
⚓ Marine Technologies
💼 Applications for the Blue Economy

👩‍🎓This is an international and interdisciplinary learning experience that will take place at three universities: the University of Trieste, the National Technical University of Athens (Ethniko Metobio Prolethio), and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing at the University of Zagreb (UNIZG-FER).

🌐OGS, a partner in the consortium of the MARBLE Master's project, carried out within the Interreg IPA Adrion program, also contributed to the development of this new program.

🎬 And that's a wrap for the 2026 AMARE-MED Summer School!

🐠The 2026 edition of the Advanced school on Multispecies modelling Approaches for ecosystem-based marine REsource management in the MEDiterranean Sea (AMARE-MED) took place over an intensive week in Malta from 22 - 26 June.

👩‍🎓This year's summer school brought together 24 students and young researchers from Italy, Tunisia, Malta, the United States, Canada, Algeria, India, Albania, Germany, the United Kingdom, Morocco, Turkey, Denmark, and China.

🤝The 2026 edition was hosted by Xjenza Malta at Villa Bighi (Kalkara, Malta), and focused on size-structure-based fisheries models, alternating theoretical lectures with practical programming sessions under the guidance of internationally renowned professors Andre Punt, Professor at the School of Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences at the University of Washington, and Ken Haste Andersen, Professor of Theoretical Marine Ecology at the Technical University of Denmark.

On June 8-19, 2026, thanks to prominent lecturers and the multidisciplinary approach of the curricular offer, the students of the Advanced Master jointly organized by OGS - Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale and Università degli studi di Trieste had the opportunity to strengthen their professional skills and competencies in relevant fields of the sustainable blue economy sector.

Two key moments:

🚢 The day at the Port Network Authority in Trieste with Prof. Vittorio Torbianelli, Secretary General of the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea – Port of Trieste, which included lectures and a tour of the port.

🤿 The day at the Area Marina Protetta Miramare, exploring the tidal notches of the Gulf of Trieste with Prof. Furlani and snorkeling close to the Castle.

🤝Yesterday marked a significant milestone in the fields of research, innovation, and scientific training in the Mediterranean region with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between OGS - Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale and Xjenza Malta, the Maltese government agency responsible for promoting and coordinating scientific research, technological innovation, and scientific dissemination.

🖊️ The agreement was signed in Malta by OGS President Nicola Casagli and Xjenza Malta CEO Silvio Scerri, representing an important step forward in a partnership already active through numerous European and initiatives, including JPI Oceans, the 5+5 Dialogue, BlueMissionMed, the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership, the ONE Water Alliance, and Horizon Europe activities.

🐟 The signing of the MoU coincided with the official opening of the AMARE-MED 2026 Summer School, dedicated to advanced multispecies modeling approaches for ecosystem-based management of Mediterranean marine resources.

🌊This year’s theme “Building Capacities for an Innovative and Resilient Sustainable Blue Economy” drew 34 students from Algeria, Croatia, Egypt, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Morocco, Pakistan, Portugal, Spain, and Tunisia – a true representation of the Mediterranean learning community 🌿🌍

🎓✨ Congratulations to the Graduates of the 8th Edition of the Advanced Master in Sustainable Blue Economy! ✨🎓

On June 17th, we celebrated a milestone at our diploma ceremony, honoring the dedication, hard work, and passion of our talented students who have completed this prestigious program.

🌊The program’s objectives include improving professional skills and the quality of research in the marine and maritime sectors, as well as introducing innovative topics such as science diplomacy to foster dialogue among countries and facilitate mobility and access to research infrastructure.

In recent years, the Master’s program, jointly organized by the Università degli studi di Trieste and OGS - Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale, has received significant international recognition, including being ranked among the top five European Master’s programs on Blue Economy topics by Blue Jobs, the Project Award 2021, and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) label as part of the Blue Skills initiative.

👏 Congratulations to all the students who successfully completed the program for the 2024–2025 academic year and received their Master’s degree.

🌊 The 2026 edition of the Blue Skills Summer School “Building Capacities for an Innovative and Resilient Sustainable Blue Economy” has officially started!

👨‍🎓👩‍🎓 We are delighted to welcome the new group of 34 passionate students from across the Euro-Mediterranean region.

🤝 Organised by OGS - Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale, this year's school includes the Interreg Italy-Croatia Programmes Beyond and MareSkill, within the framework of the Blue Skills initiative.

📆 When? 15-19 June 2026
📍Where? In Trieste (Italy)

🐟 On the first day, students were hosted at EMUNI University, where they had a general introduction before embarking on field trips in Slovenia, with one group exploring sustainable aquaculture at RIBOGOJNICA FONDA and Sea Oasis Piran, and the second group visiting the beautiful landscape of Krajinski park Sečoveljske soline.

🙏 A big thank you to the local experts for showing us these incredible practices on the field!

📚 From today, the week of intensive classes begin in Trieste, during which students will have the opportunity to learn the unique skills needed to address future challenges in the marine sector, focusing on marine ecosystem conservation and the potential of offshore wind energy in the Adriatic Sea.
