New research on the crater suggests that the impact that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs also created a long-lived underground hydrothermal system capable of sustaining life-friendly conditions for at least 8 million years, far longer than previously thought.
The study is based on rock samples drilled from the crater during Expedition 364 in 2016. https://www.ecord.org/expedition364/

Last week in Trieste, Italy, the workshop βMani in Pastaβ brought together researchers to define a clear scientific vision and identify the writing team for a SPARC proposal.
SPARC (Scientific Projects using Ocean Drilling Archives) proposals are part of the IODPΒ³ programme and focus on extracting new scientific insights from existing ocean drilling materials and datasets through innovative and interdisciplinary approaches.
The proposal will investigate Antarctic Bottom Water formation and the slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) during past warm periods. The project aims to maximize the scientific value of existing drilling data from key deep-water formation sites in both hemispheres through consistent new analytical approaches and the integration of machine learning techniques.
By improving our understanding of hemispheric phase relationships, this work will contribute to better forecasting of future climate scenarios in our warming world.
