Congratulations to Balanand who today defended his PhD thesis on polymer-derived thermal insulators. It was a great presentation and got an excellent score “cum laude”!
We wish him all the best for his future. Good luck, Dr. Balanand!!!

Have you ever noticed white stains on old glasses? Those are a result of glass corrosion in humid environment, also known as weathering. Alkali or alkaline earth in the glass composition dissolve in water and then precipitate forming crystals on the glass surface. Most often these are composed by CaCO3, whose orthorhombic polymorph (aragonite) possesses a fascinating crystal habit! Have a look to the surface of this “corroded” glass!

Do you know how cuttlefishes move up and down in the sea?

They use their bone as a buoyancy tank. By regulating the pressure of the liquid-gas mixture inside their bone, they maintain their vertical position underwater.

The cuttlebone is an extra-light cellular material (up to 90% of interconnected porosity ) made of aragonite, which is a polymorph of calcium carbonate.

At the Glass and Ceramics Lab, Francesca Cestari and Giovanni Chemello use it to synthesize new materials for human bone regeneration.
