🇬🇧 Noémie Lacroix, Davide Morra, Marta Gravela and advisory board member Christian D. Liddy took part in the European Association of Urban History conference in Barcellona last week, where they presented and discussed research on political networks between town and countryside in southern Piedmont, and water management in Embrun.

🇮🇹 La scorsa settimana Noémie Lacroix, Davide Morra, Marta Gravela e Christian D. Liddy, membro del nostro advisory board, hanno partecipato alla conferenza della European Association of Urban History a Barcellona, dove hanno presentato e discusso ricerche sulle reti politiche fra città e campagna nel Piemonte meridionale, e sulla gestione delle acque a Embrun.

🇬🇧 DEMALPS strikes again! We've been awarded an ERC Proof of Concept Grant for our side project NOTARI-AI, with which we aim to develop a new methodology to read and extract data from handwritten archival sources. This methodology will be tested in collaboration with the Archivio Storico della Città di Torino, Archives du département du Rhône et de la métropole de Lyon, and Borromeo Isola Bella.

🇮🇹 DEMALPS colpisce ancora! Abbiamo vinto un ERC Proof of Concept Grant per il nostro progetto NOTARI-AI, con il quale intendiamo sviluppare una nuova metodologia per leggere ed estrarre dati dalle fonti archivistiche manoscritte. Questa metodologia sarà testata in collaborazione con l'Archivio Storico della Città di Torino, gli Archives du département du Rhône et de la métropole de Lyon, e l'Archivio Borromeo Isola Bella.

🇬🇧 Last month Chiara Corradini and Ciro Berardinetti returned to the Antigorio Valley and took part in this wonderful initiative organised by the CRAVA PERSA association, aimed at providing a comprehensive insight into the mountain region.
It was a wonderful opportunity to exchange views with experts from other fields and local residents. We discussed commons and forests with the aim of better understanding what these resources meant to mountain dwellers in medieval times, before going on to debate their significance for us today.
A truly wonderful day!

🇮🇹 Un mese fa Chiara e Ciro sono tornati in Valle Antigorio e intervenuti in questa bellissima iniziativa organizzata dall'associazione CRAVA PERSA, volta a fare conoscere (a 360 gradi) il territorio montano.
Un bel momento di confronto con esperti di altri settori e abitanti del luogo. Si è parlato di beni comuni e boschi con l'intento di comprendere meglio cosa queste risorse rappresentassero per gli abitanti delle montagne in età medievale per poi dibattere sul significato che hanno per noi oggi.
Davvero una bellissima giornata!

🇬🇧 We’d like to introduce Ciro Berardinetti, another member of the DEMALPS team.

Ciro is a postdoctoral fellow in the DemAlps project with a grant co-funded by the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Turin. He obtained his PhD in 2025 from the University of Rome Tor Vergata with a thesis on the relationship between monarchy, lordships, communities, and officers of justice in the Kingdom of Naples in the 15th century.

In the DemAlps project, he studies community writings preserved in the archives of noble families in Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta. Specifically, his research focuses on the multiple forms of political coordination possible within Alpine communities.

🇮🇹 Vi presentiamo Ciro Berardinetti, altro prezioso componente del team DEMALPS.

Ciro è ricercatore nel progetto DemAlps grazie a un assegno di ricerca cofinanziato dal Dipartimento di Studi Storici dell'Università di Torino. Ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca nel 2025 presso l'Università di Roma Tor Vergata con una tesi sul rapporto tra monarchia, signorie, comunità e ufficiali di giustizia nel Regno di Napoli nel XV secolo.

Nell’ambito del progetto DemAlps, studia la documentazione comunitaria conservata negli archivi delle famiglie signorili del Piemonte e della Valle d’Aosta. In particolare, la sua ricerca si concentra sulle molteplici forme di coordinamento politico possibili all’interno delle comunità alpine.

🇬🇧 The first collective publication from the DEMALPS project has been released and is available in open access!
It is a special issue of the journal *Annali dell'Istituto storico italo-germanico in Trento | Jahrbuch des italienisch-deutschen historischen Instituts in Trient*, edited by PI Marta Gravela. The articles present the initial findings of the survey carried out by the DEMALPS team on the archives of the Western Alps, introduce the database created to collect the research data, and establish a dialogue with studies on the Lombard Alps. In his conclusions, Beat Kümin draws on some of the ideas that emerged from the articles to suggest broader perspectives.

🇮🇹 È uscita ed è disponibile ad accesso aperto la prima pubblicazione collettiva del progetto DEMALPS!
Si tratta di un numero speciale della rivista *Annali dell'Istituto storico italo-germanico in Trento | Jahrbuch des italienisch-deutschen historischen Instituts in Trient*, curato dalla PI Marta Gravela. Gli articoli espongono i primi risultati della ricognizione svolta dal gruppo DEMALPS sugli archivi delle Alpi occidentali, presentano il database creato per raccogliere i dati della ricerca e avviano il confronto con gli studi sulle Alpi lombarde. Nelle conclusioni, Beat Kümin raccoglie alcuni degli spunti emersi dagli articoli per posizionarli entro prospettive più ampie.

🇬🇧 Marta Gravela, currently fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies in the Humanities in Edinburgh, will deliver two seminars this week: on Wednesday she will present a paper on 'Rebellious mountains. Anti-seigneurial revolts in the late medieval Alps' at the University of Glasgow, while on Thursday she'll give a talk on 'Making an Alpine nation?' at IASH (and online).
