Some useful everyday expressions.

- Why on earth....? / Perché mai .....?
Why on earth does Jack want to live in a trullo without running water and electricity ?
Perché mai Jack vuole vivere in un trullo senza acqua corrente e luce ?

- Ups and downs / Alti e bassi
I hope business will improve soon, we've been through many ups and downs, lately.
Spero che gli affari miglioreranno presto, abbiamo attraversato molti alti e bassi ultimamente.

- So far so good / Tutto bene finora
How is your English course going ? So far so good.
Come va il tuo corso di lingua inglese ? Tutto bene finora.

- Prices have dropped .... / I prezzi sono calati ....
The price of petrol has dropped quite a bit.

Students often ask me how to say : arrangiarsi, nel peggiore delle ipotesi, non capire un tubo, anzi e uscirne fuori, in English. Here are some examples.

- Arrangiarsi = to make do with
Nel peggiore delle ipotesi = if the worst comes to the worst
I wasn't able to do any shopping. So for dinner, we'll have to make do with what we have at home. If the worst comes to the worst, we'll order a take away " riso, patate con le cozze".
Non ho potuto fare la spesa. Allora, per cena, saremo costretti ad arrangiarci con ciò che abbiamo in casa. Nel peggiore delle ipotesi ordineremo un " riso, patate con le cozze " da asporto.

- Non capire un tubo = to make head or tails of something
Non capire un "H"
This painting is weird. I can't make head or tails of what the artist is trying to express !
Questo dipinto è proprio strano. Non riesco a capire un tubo di ciò che l'artista sta cercando di esprimere !

- Anzi = Quite the opposite
Piero thinks that I don't like " La Parmigiana ". Quite the opposite ! I adore " La Parmigiana ".
Piero pensa che a me non piaccia la parmigiana. Anzi ! Io adoro la parmigiana.

- Uscirne fuori, evitare, schivare = to get out of something
Tomorrow, I have to take a group of kids to Lido Gandoli. I gave them my word. I can't get out of it.
Domani sarò costretto a portare un gruppo di ragazzi a Lido Gandoli. Ho dato loro la mia parola. Non posso evitarlo.

The project was very successful. Nothing ventured,
nothing gained, so they say.
Il progetto fu un grande successo. Chi non risica,
non rosica, cosi dicono.
- Call it a day / basta per oggi
I’m exhausted ! Let’s call it a day.
Sono esausto ! Basta per oggi.
- A close call / scamparla per un pelo
My flight was the last flight before the strike.
That was a close call !
Il mio volo era l’ultimo volo prima dello sciopero.
Me la sono scampata per un pelo.
- Whet your appetite / stuzzicare l’appetito !
These starters will whet your appetite, but don’t overdo it,
in Puglia it‘s like having a whole meal.
Questi antipasti ti stuzzicheranno l’appetito, ma non strafare, in Puglia è come mangiare un intero pasto.

Interesting common English expressions.

-To have the cheek to do something / avere la faccia tosta
He had the cheek to deny the truth.
Ha avuto la faccia tosta di negare la verità.

- To be chicken / non avere fegato
She won’t go on the roller coaster. I think she is chicken.
Non vuole andare sulla montagna russa. Credo che lei non abbia fegato.

- A piece of cake / una cosa facile - una passeggiata
The exam was a piece of cake.
L’esame è stato una passeggiata.

- Let bygones be bygones / mettiamoci una pietra sopra –
dimenticate e perdonate
Peter and Jim get on very well now. It’s important to let bygones be bygones.
Peter e Jim vanno molto d’accordo ora. È importante mettere una pietra sopra.

“ Back “ is a very interesting word as it plays an important part in everyday spoken English. Here are some examples.

- Back to back - consecutivo
What a day ! I have had three back-to-back parent – teacher class committee meetings.
Che giornata ! Ho avuto tre consigli di classe consecutivi

- to back someone up - sostenere qualcuno
Jane had a great idea. All her colleagues backed her up.
Jane ha avuto un’idea fantastica. Tutti i suoi colleghi l’hanno sostenuta

- To pay back someone - saldare un debito
I have to pay back John the money he lent me
Devo saldare il denaro che John mi ha prestato

- To back off - lasciare in pace, allontanarsi
I told the rude journalist to back off
Dissi al giornalista scortese di allontanarsi

- To go back to the drawing board – tornare a rivedere i propri piani o progetto
We need to go back to the drawing board. (drawing board = tavola da disegno)
