BE TRUTHFUL WITH THAT FEEDBACK

Dear Educator,

As you round up the session, please let your feedback be genuine and intentional. A child's growth to the next phase could depend on that. Give a true picture of that child's ability. You owe them that.

Dear parents, also be open-minded to accept feedback s. The goal should be growth for the child. Most importantly, know your child well and monitor their growth.

Continous Professional Development ( CPD)

For an Educator, professional development is continuous and you do not have to break the bank to achieve that.

Here are four cost-effective strategies for teachers to engage in CPD:

1. Participate in Online Courses and WebinarsTake advantage of free or low-cost virtual platforms to learn at your own pace. Many universities and educational providers offer accessible, high-quality modules.Platforms: Platforms like FutureLearn and Europass Teacher Academy offer short, self-paced courses and articles to update teaching strategies.

2. Start Peer Observation and Coaching: Colleagues can support one another’s growth by observing each other's classes, co-planning lessons, and engaging in deliberate practice.How it works: Pair up with a colleague to plan a lesson, observe each other teaching, or conduct "unseen" observations where you review recorded footage of your own classroom. You can use these cycles to share experiences and refine instructional delivery.

3. Engage in Action ResearchAction research involves identifying a specific problem in your own classroom, researching potential solutions, and evaluating the results.How it works: Choose a focal point—such as improving student engagement or assessing new technology. Implement the strategy, collect data (like student feedback or test scores), and reflect on the outcome. You can log these self-directed findings to satisfy your official CPD requirements.

4. Leverage Internal School WorkshopsAvoid pricey external consultants by tapping into the diverse skills and expertise already existing within your school's staff.How it works: Have teachers within different departments take turns running brief workshops or "speed dating" sessions to share successful pedagogical strategies, creative projects, or new digital tools with the whole faculty.

HERE ARE THREE THINGS TO NOTE WHEN TEACHING YOUNG LEARNERS VIRTUALLY

1. Plan short and interactive activities: keep lessons short , use interactive tools as they can get easily board and also incorporate brain breaks.

2. Establish virtual classroom routines: set ground rules like raising hands to speak and asking for permissions.

3. Leverage visual props : Most young learners easily lose focus during learning. Keep their attention using visual props. I will share in my next post some visual props that can aid your virtual tutoring journey.

HOME ACTIVITIES

Working with children at home, especially younger children builds stronger emotional bonds and boosts their cognitive and motor skills.

Working side by side with children encourages open conversation and quality time. This helps to build their self confidence and sense of belonging.

This also helps you as a parent to notice any learning gaps they may have early on. I know we get busy, but being involved in their work is also as important.
