🌱 New Open Access Publication!

We are proud to share our latest scientific publication:

"Endophyte-mediated mechanisms of drought and salinity tolerance in rice: physiological, molecular, and field perspectives"

This international collaboration between researchers from India, Iraq, and Italy explores how beneficial endophytic microorganisms can significantly improve rice resilience against drought and salinity through physiological and molecular mechanisms.

While this research advances sustainable agriculture, it also has important implications for the CBRNe community. Climate change, environmental degradation, and food supply disruptions are increasingly recognized as critical components of modern security and emergency preparedness. Building resilient crops contributes directly to food security, One Health, and long-term societal resilience against natural and CBRNe-related crises.

This work highlights how interdisciplinary and international cooperation can help address some of the most pressing global challenges.

🚀 The last week of July starts in the best possible way!

We are proud to celebrate the publication of a new Open Access scientific paper authored by researchers from the University of Rome Tor Vergata and the International Master Courses in Protection Against CBRNe Events.

📖 "Radioecological and plant response patterns under chronic radiation exposure at former nuclear test sites" has been published in *Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology.

Congratulations to Dr. Gian Marco Ludovici, Principal Investigator, and to all co-authors:
Paola Amelia Tassi, Alba Iannotti, Colomba Russo, Francesco Gargallo di Castel Lentini, Timothy Alexander Mousseau, and Andrea Malizia.

The review examines the long-term environmental legacy of former nuclear weapons testing sites—including the Nevada Test Site, Semipalatinsk, the Marshall Islands and French Polynesia—highlighting radionuclide persistence, environmental transfer processes, and plant responses to chronic radiation exposure.

As an Open Access publication, the article is freely available to researchers and professionals worldwide, contributing to the advancement of radioecology, environmental protection, and CBRNe risk assessment.

The Abstract Submission Deadline for the 4th International Conference on Safety and Innovation in CBRNe (SICC SERIES 2026) is 3 August 2026.

📈 Technical sessions are filling up quickly! To maximize the opportunity of accommodating your contribution, all authors are kindly requested to indicate THREE DIFFERENT Technical Sessions, ranked in order of preference (Option 1, Option 2 and Option 3), as specified in the abstract submission form.

📝 The Scientific and Technical Committee will carefully evaluate each submission and assign it to the most appropriate session, taking into account:
✅ the scientific relevance of the paper,
✅ the authors’ preferred session ranking,
✅ and the remaining availability within each Technical Session.

Inclusive Emergency Communication: From Theory to Practice

As part of last week’s activities of the Second Level International Master in Protection Against CBRNe Events – Advanced Course for Decision Makers’ Advisors at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Dr. Luca Rotondi, President of Emergenza Sordi APS, delivered a highly engaging lecture on accessible emergency communication.

The session concluded with a short practical exercise, in which two Master students recorded emergency video statements for two fictional scenarios:
🚨 a simulated terrorist attack
☣️ a simulated fire involving chemical contamination

The objective was to demonstrate how public emergency messages can be designed to communicate essential information rapidly, clearly, and inclusively, ensuring that Deaf and hard-of-hearing people receive the same life-saving information as the rest of the population.

Even a brief simulation highlighted a crucial lesson: accessibility is not an optional feature of crisis communication—it is an essential element of effective emergency management and community resilience.

This strategic topic will also be addressed during the 4th International Conference on Safety and Innovation in CBRNe (SICC 2026), where experts from around the world will discuss innovative approaches to inclusive risk communication, emergency preparedness, crisis management, and community resilience.

🌍 SICC Series CBRNe Conference 2026 – Technical Session 12

🚨 Emerging Risks: Climate, Conflict, Food Security & Space Weather Impacts on CBRNe Systems

The world is facing a new generation of interconnected threats. Climate change, geopolitical instability, food insecurity, technological dependence, and even space weather are increasingly influencing CBRNe preparedness, emergency response, and the resilience of critical infrastructures.

Technical Session 12 will explore how extreme weather events, NaTech disasters, radiological releases, vector-borne diseases, food contamination, hybrid threats, and ionospheric disturbances affecting GNSS and satellite communications can impact emergency management and global security. The session will also examine innovative approaches for early warning, anticipatory action, integrated monitoring systems, and cross-sector cooperation to strengthen resilience against complex and cascading risks.

The session will be chaired by three internationally recognised experts:

🇦🇺 Prof. Tony Ho**er – Professor and inaugural Director of the Centre for Radiation Research, Education, and Innovation at Adelaide University. An internationally recognised radiation biologist, he has led research programmes worth more than AUD 30 million and serves as an expert consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Radiation Emergency Preparedness and Response. He is a Fellow and Past President of the Australasian Radiation Protection Society and has advised Australian national CBRN and counter-terrorism committees on radiation protection and emergency preparedness.

🇷🇸 Prof. Radovan Karkalić – Full Professor at the Military Academy of the University of Defence of the Republic of Serbia and Visiting Professor at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. With more than twenty years of military and academic experience, he is internationally recognised for his work in CBRN defence, operational preparedness, contaminated environment training, and international cooperation in education and research, contributing to the development of future CBRN professionals and military capabilities.

🇳🇱 Dr. Stef (Stoffer) Stienstra – Medical doctor, biochemist, and former Commander of the Royal Dutch Navy Reserve with over four decades of experience as a CBRN Subject Matter Expert. He has supported numerous international missions and European projects in biodefence, public health, medical consequence management, and civil–military cooperation. A lecturer at the NATO School and the Joint CBRN Defence Centre of Excellence, he has also served as Visiting Professor at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, promoting international education and research in CBRNe risk management.
