Vi siete mai trovati a dire una frase in inglese e il tuo interlocutore ti guarda con l'espressione confusa della ragazza qui sotto?!

Ripensi alla tua frase: la grammatica andava bene, la pronuncia quasi impeccabile... qual'è il problema? Forse hai usato un 'False friend' - il nemico acerrimo di chi impara un'altra lingua.

Si tratta di parole o espressioni che hanno un significato in italiano ma uno totalmente diverso in inglese.

Ad esempio 'pretend'. In inglese vuol dire far finta, in italiano, 'pretendere', significa tutt'altro.

Quindi se tu, parlando dei suoi datori di lavoro, chiedessi alla tua amica inglese:

Why do they pretend so much?
(Perché fanno così tanto finta?😊)

anziché:

Why do they demand so much of you? Or, why are they so demanding?
(Perché pretendono così tanto da te?)

la reazione sarebbe di totale smarrimento!
