Our study examined how Malaysian media students use ChatGPT for content development and what they perceive as its cognitive and creative benefits.
Some key findings:
๐ก Students primarily use ChatGPT for brainstorming, organising ideas, and overcoming writer's block, rather than simply generating complete content.
โก Most students perceived that GenAI improves efficiency, helping them complete content development tasks in less time.
๐จ Students reported improvements in content quality and perceived creative support, particularly during the early stages of content development.
โ ๏ธ Despite these benefits, students remained cautious about AI accuracy, overreliance, reduced independent thinking, and originality.
๐ค The study suggests that GenAI is most educationally valuable when students critically evaluate, adapt, and refine AI-generated outputs while maintaining human judgement and creative agency.
The key takeaway is clear: Generative AI is most valuable when it supportsโnot replacesโhuman creativity and critical thinking.
