Established in 1859, the Pontifical North American College is "America’s seminary in Rome."
The Pontifical North American College in Rome serves priests and seminarians of the United States, Canada and Australia in three primary ways:
- The Seminary
- Casa Santa Maria (graduate studies)
- Institute for Continuing Theological Education (sabbatical programs)
The PNAC also oversees the Bishop's Office for US Visitors to the Vatican

The College community mourns the passing of alumnus, the Most Reverend William F. Murphy ’65, C’74, former Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. A dedicated member of the Board of Governors for many years, he was honored with the Rector’s Award in 2023 in recognition of his faithful service. May he rest in peace. +

He spoke on the preaching of St. John Henry Newman, the newest Doctor of the Church.
