The 𝐏𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐱 𝐝𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 has been awarded to the Spanish architect 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐢 𝐑𝐨𝐢𝐠, following the indication of the Scientific Committee of the Piranesi Prix de Rome in collaboration with the 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐥𝐢 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢 𝐏𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢 𝐏𝐚𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢 𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢 𝐝𝐢 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚 𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚.

The award ceremony will take place on 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟎, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, at the 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐥’𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚 – 𝐀𝐜𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐞, where Manuel Portaceli Roig will deliver a 𝐋𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬 retracing the most significant stages of his career and his engagement with architecture for cultural heritage.

The ceremony will be centred on the Lectio Magistralis of Manuel Portaceli Roig, introduced by a 𝐝𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨 𝐛𝐲 𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐢 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐨 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐢, and preceded by contributions by 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐨, 𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐚 𝐑𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐢, 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚 𝐋𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐚 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐬 on the relationship between university and professional practice. The 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐱 𝐝𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐞 will be presented by 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐨 𝐋𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐢.

Over the years, the award has highlighted the work of young architects and designers engaging with themes of architecture for archaeology, museography and heritage enhancement, within the framework of the 𝐈𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 promoted by the 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐚 𝐀𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐚.

Each project represents a different way of interpreting the relationship between architecture, history and place, contributing to a growing archive of ideas and visions.

The award is dedicated to the memory of 𝐏𝐚𝐨𝐥𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐢, a colleague and friend whose dedication to architecture, cultural heritage and education left a lasting mark on students, tutors and collaborators who had the opportunity to work with her through the activities of the 𝐏𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐱 𝐝𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐞, the Master programme and the academic initiatives connected to the Accademia Adrianea.

During the event, a selection of 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐬 will compete for the 𝐏𝐚𝐨𝐥𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐢 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝, while other students will present their final research and design projects developed throughout the Master’s programme.

Supported by the generosity of 𝐏𝐚𝐨𝐥𝐚’𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲, the award grants a 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 to the best thesis dedicated to 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, developed in relation to the extraordinary context of the 𝐀𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬.

The event will also include the 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 to all students of the Master’s programme.

After an intense weekend of activities, the 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 of the 𝐈𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 continues in the 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚 of Rome.

During the first days, students explored the project sites through introductory visits across the 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐥𝐥 and the 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦, observing closely the complex stratification of one of the most extraordinary archaeological landscapes in the world. Site readings, discussions and introductory lectures have allowed participants to familiarize themselves with the historical layers, spatial relationships and architectural challenges of this unique context.

Today the workshop reaches a key moment with the conference “𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓 𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐀 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐀 𝐍𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐄. 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐉𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐒 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐄𝐍𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐔𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐋 𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐄𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐎𝐅 𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐄”, hosted at the Curia Senatus in the Roman Forum. The contributions and discussions of the day will provide students with further insights into contemporary approaches to the enhancement of the monumental archaeological center of Rome.

With these perspectives in mind, participants will soon enter the full design phase of the workshop, developing architectural proposals capable of engaging with the multilayered palimpsest of the site.

The design work will be guided by 𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐢, 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐥𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐢, 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨 𝐑𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐚, 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐎𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐨, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐢, accompanying students through the next stages of research and project development.

The event will open with greetings by 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢, Director of the Parco archeologico del Colosseo, 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐡𝐢, President of the Ordine degli Architetti di Roma, and 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐥𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐢, Emeritus President of the Accademia Adrianea di Architettura e Archeologia – Pantheon Institute of Rome. The conference will be introduced by 𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐢, President of the Accademia Adrianea di Architettura e Archeologia, Director of 4AJournal and Full Professor at the Politecnico di Torino.

The presentations will unfold through conversations with representatives of the 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐨 and other cultural institutions, encouraging dialogue between architectural design, heritage management and institutional perspectives. The meeting aims to foster reflection on strategies for conserving and enhancing Rome’s heritage today.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐞”, dedicated to current projects and perspectives for the enhancement of Rome’s central archaeological area.

The week will also include the 𝐏𝐈𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐈 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐗 𝐃𝐄 𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐑 𝐀𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐃 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, which will be presented to architect 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐢 𝐑𝐨𝐢𝐠.

🔹The Athens Workshop is Now in Its Design Phase!🔹

After an intense opening phase of site visits, inspections, and academic activities across Athens, the Itinerant Master Course 2025–2026 in Architecture, Museography and Exhibition Design for Archaeology has now fully entered its core design stage.

From the Acropolis Museum to the summit of the Acropolis, from the hills of Pnyx and Philopappos to the Ancient Agora, students immersed themselves in the stratified archaeological landscape of Athens, confronting one of the most complex and symbolically powerful heritage sites in the world. They also had the exclusive privilege of accessing the Parthenon restoration site, gaining first-hand insight into ongoing conservation practices and the delicate balance between structural intervention, historical integrity, and contemporary responsibility.

🏛 Hosted at the Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene (SAIA) and developed in collaboration with the Acropolis Restoration Service and the Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, the workshop focuses on enhancing the broader Acropolis area through the design of visitor routes, exhibition structures, and support spaces connected to ongoing restoration activities.

The workshop is actually led by Paolo Conforti and Lorenzo Simoni, guiding students through intensive studio sessions and daily reviews.

A pivotal moment of this first phase was the Seminar on the Acropolis held on Monday, February 9, enriched by the fundamental contributions of Pier Federico Caliari, Konstantinos Karanasos, Sandro Pittini, Francesco Leoni, Greta Allegretti, and Paolo Conforti, offering critical perspectives on restoration, architectural interpretation, and contemporary intervention within archaeological contexts.

✨ As the final workshop of the Master 2025–2026, Athens represents a decisive synthesis moment and a preparatory step toward the development of the Master’s theses.

Students are now fully engaged in the design phase, and we eagerly await the outcomes of this last and crucial stage of the Itinerant Master.

The interdisciplinary journal 4A Journal, promoted by the Accademia Adrianea di Architettura e Archeologia, launches a new Call for Abstracts for its upcoming Issue 05, dedicated to the relationship between architectural design and the space of the mise-en-scène.

This issue explores scenography not only as the realm of traditional representation—theatre, cinema, television—but also in its expanded dimension, encompassing museums, exhibitions, retail environments, gardens, and urban spaces.
The aim is to investigate how architecture and scenography intersect today, as narrative devices capable of shaping performative space, communicating cultural meaning, and redefining the legacy of ephemeral design.

🔹 Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

– Spaces designed for performance (theatrical and cinematic)
– Scenography as a perceptual and representational device (exhibitions, gardens, urban perspectives)
