The John Felice Rome Center is an American-style campus of Loyola University Chicago, located in Monte Mario, just 15 minutes northwest of Vatican City. This study abroad program offers summer, semester, and full-year programs to over 600 students annually, and and boasts more than 15,000 alumni from over 650 different universities. The JFRC offers over 40 courses in Fine Arts, Film, Music, Fashion, Architecture, Sculpture, Communication, Political Science, History, Literature, Philosophy, Business and many other fields of study. The Rome Center aims to highlight every element of the Eternal City, both from past to present and from highly visible to the invisible.

We often collaborate with Kwanza Musi Dos Santos, who leads a decolonial walking tour around the city, introducing both the city's well-known monuments in from a different historical perspective, as well as stopping in lesser-known places. She critically analyzes how colonial and fascist-era urban planning intersect with contemporary multicultural settings.

In May, panelists and participants of MiMEC (Migration, Mobilities, and Environments Conference) were invited on this walking tour, which started in Piazza della Repubblica and finished at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.

At the beginning of the month, a group of Loyola alums traveled to Rome for the Alumni Summer School.

Our alumni students attended a variety of lectures with faculty members in the city and on campus, studying ancient and modern history, Italian language and art history.
They also participated in a pilgrimage and cultural events like a cooking class and a wine tasting, while staying in the dormitory and soaking in campus life and the community.
This year, the summer school was open to all Loyola alumni who previously had not had the chance to study abroad were able to experience Rome!
We spoke to three alums, who did not study in Rome, about their experiences:

Inspired by Willow Palecek’s live action game of papal politics entitled "Conclave", last semester students and faculty took on fictitious characters in the 1271 election of the pope.

With their new identities, the members of the conclave grappled with family and church politics, personifying individuals from some of the most powerful families of medieval Rome, including the Boboni and the Compatri.

The electors swung from one side to another as the possible popes sought to secure their votes with promises and affirmations of their values and beliefs. Family members turned against each other.

The deadlock continued through five votes. However the matter was resolved thanks to intervention from one of the senior members who suggested that to avoid a schism, two cardinals switch their allegiance to Riccardo Compatri, the Mastermind, meaning his intense campaigning paid off. The Dean of the College of Cardinals announced him as Pope.

Due to campus fire regulations, there was no white smoke!

Last month, more than 70 experts, educators, academics, scientists, and researchers convened at the John Felice Rome Center for MiMEC (Migration, Mobilities, and Environments Conference).

This interdisciplinary conference examined the dynamic experiences of individuals who, throughout history and in contemporary contexts, are engaged in complex relationships as they traverse and transform, and are transformed by, multiple environments.

This Summer Session, students had the opportunity to embark on the first overnight trip to Naples!🍕🌋

"The Naples overnight trip was an incredibly rewarding experience. We got to explore the city in an authentic way and see things that tourists typically miss. Before attending the Rome Center, Leslie David Baker (BS '80) had only read books and watched movies about Italy. Years later, at the urging of his father, “Stanley” traveled to Rome and reveled in the majestic art of the Sistine Chapel, the Pieta, and the Trevi Fountain.

Baker spoke with Loyola Today about these formative moments at the Rome Center, as well as acting, office jobs, and life on set of “The Office”.
