Electra, a Cosmo-type women’s magazine.

CHARLOTTE, twenty-five - talented and work-weary; in the wrong job

SAM, twenty-four - a romantic who struggles with his conscience

THE AUDITION
is for a world premiere staged reading of excerpts from William Demby's novel BEETLECREEK.

PRODUCTION DATES: March 14 - March 20

AUDITION DATES:

PLEASE NOTE A photo ID and green pass is necessary to gain entry to the university.

Roles:
Bill Trapp,
a retired carnival worker living in silence and seclusion in the outskirts of town, befriends
Johnny Johnson,
a Pittsburgh teenager living with relatives in Beetlecreek.
Bill is white. Johnny is black.
Both are searching for acceptance, something that will give meaning to their lives.
David Diggs,
the boy's dispirited uncle, aspires to be an artist but has to settle for sign painting.
His wife, Mary Diggs,
who agrees to give hospitality to David's nephew to keep up appearances in her church community. Mary aspires to climb in the community.
Edith Johnson's, an old flame of David's, whose return to Beetlecreek, inspires him to get away. This relationship will be no better than his loveless marriage.
Tolley/Baby Boy: (double role) Tolley, the barber, an important voice in the community, Baby Boy, a gang member the go between the leader and members.
Narrator/Pokey: the narrator is the voice which carries the through line of the storey throughout the performance and is representative of the town Pinkerton. Pokey is the young girl whose unhappiness starts the scandal.

Margaret Fuller (1810-1850), una delle più importanti femministe americane del suo tempo, era una filosofa, giornalista e critica letteraria. Apparteneva alla comunità intellettuale del New England chiamata trascendentalisti, che comprendeva anche Ralph Waldo Emerson e Henry David Thoreau. ‘Summer on the Lakes’ by Sarah Margaret Fuller

Margaret Fuller (1810–1850), one of the most important American feminists of her day, was a philosopher, journalist, and literary critic. She belonged to the New England intellectual community called the transcendentalists, who also included Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Audition piece prep (actors)
Prepare a short monologue (1minute) based on ONE of these three themes:
Feminism
Childhood innocence
A spiritual experience or the cultivation of the self
The structure of the audition
Performance and exploration of monologue
Tasks in choral techniques
Physical theatre

Laura Mancini is a writer from Rome. She began her experience with journalism while she was a student at the University La Sapienza and became editor in chief of the university newspaper. She did an apprenticeship with a monthly newspaper of Rome that led her to become a registered member of the Italian journalist association in 2006. She wrote for several web magazines: the first one was Teatro.it (working as an editor in chief for 4 years). She was author for many digital and web jazz music magazines and those experiences gave her the chance to become a drama and music critic for the National newspaper Il Giornale. From 2015 to 2017 she also collaborated with the American journal West 46th Magazine, beginning to sign her articles with the pen name Candy Valentino. In 2008 she created the magazine Moozart.it, focused on art. She has published numerous fiction books and edited several Italian authors.

Sophia is an Italo-Nigerian who grew up in Warri, South-South Nigeria. Growing up, she traveled to Italy on summer holidays and finally decided to settle down in Rome in the early ’90s to continue her studies. Upon graduation from John Cabot University in Business Admin, Sophia managed a cybercafé franchise. As a young student, she also modeled and performed in theatre musicals.

Sophia featured in the English Theatre of Rome’s original monologues Easier Said than Done in 2020, where she wrote and performed Caught.

Matt Kirk is a composer and audio editor based between Rome and London, writing for a broad range of art forms, including theatre, (Edinburgh Fringe, London Soho Theatre, Vaults Festival) contemporary dance, clubs and film & tv, where original music has been used by networks including BBC, Netflix, and Channel 9, Australia.
He sings with the New Chamber Singers here in Rome, and DJs regularly in the warehouse scene in London.
Regular corporate clients include Legoland, Mars Chocolate and the UK National Grid.

ADRIENNE GROVE
Adrienne Grove has lived in Rome for three years while working for the World Food Programme. A keen traveler and organisational enthusiast, the English Theatre of Rome has benefitted from her work on stage management, dramaturgy, producing and administration.
Prior to Italy, Adrienne lived and worked in her native Canada as well as the UK, Myanmar and South Sudan. An adventurer by nature, she has been a teacher, a sailor, a dog trainer and a roller derby player named Andy War-Hole. She is currently enjoying pursuing her interest in the production side of theatre, particularly its synchronistic process aspects as well as technical light rigging, cueing and programming.

Angeliqa Devi is an actress of South Asian origin, born in England and raised in Canada. She studied acting and performing arts in Ottawa, became a wine expert in Spain and earned a PhD in genocide studies in London – all before moving to Rome, where she blissfully works in international film, TV and theatre. Angeliqa is pumped to perform in this razor sharp and alarmingly relevant satire, her third production with the English Theatre of Rome!
