Sapienza Design Research strengthens International collaboration with Hunan University, China
Today, Sapienza Design Research welcomed a distinguished delegation from Hunan University's School of Design, led by Dean Prof. Ji Tie. This significant meeting, attended by Professor Lorenzo Imbesi and colleagues Viktor Malakuczi, Ioannis Chatzigiannakis, and Gianluca Vagnani, marks another step in our commitment to global academic exchange.
As a long-standing active member of the Cumulus Association, Hunan University brings a wealth of expertise to our ongoing collaborative efforts. Building on our existing partnership, we explored promising avenues for future collaboration, including student exchanges, joint research projects, and innovative doctoral training programs.
Our discussion underscored the importance of cross-cultural academic partnerships in advancing design education and research. We are excited about the potential for joint initiatives that will create meaningful opportunities for our students and researchers.

We are pleased to announce that our talented group of PhD students have received a special recognition for their research proposal “Towards a Community of Practice for Service Design in the Public Sector: A Participatory Research Proposal” at the SID 2024 annual conference “Design and Research: Sources and Resources.”
Their research revolves around the transformative and generative potential of service design in different domains of application. Specifically, they have at first begun with a reflection on the notion of the Public, to then propose a research that seeks to establish an open, transversal community of practice through a series of periodic calls to action that will bolster the constitution and the cyclical updating of three incremental outputs: the definition of a common and shared Taxonomy for framing the possible tools, scales, scopes, and methodological approaches; the drafting of a shared Manifesto among designers, experts, and practitioners to counteract the reduction of design to a disciplinary tool and enable its potential for critical-systemic vision and proposal on the present; and the programming of a Glossary, a tool for the recognition of a shared language in the service design community.
Huge congratulation to the co-authors of the research proposal: Miriam Saviano, Mariia Ershova, Rachele Gracci, Efren Trevisan, Lorenzo Brunello, Aureliano Capri, Luca Baldini, and Sonia Belhaj.
We take this opportunity to thank once again Societa Italiana di Design for their effort and recognition, the Università IUAV di Venezia for amazingly hosting SID 2024 annual conference, the Sapienza Università di Roma, the ISIA Roma Design, the ISIA Firenze, the Politecnico di Milano, and the Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna.
