Some storytellers arrive with a lecture. Rosemary Wells arrived with a confession. "I certainly was drawing pictures before I could even speak," she told our Elementary School Students, and in that single sentence the room understood that they were in the presence of someone for whom art has never been a choice, but a vocation.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Ms. Wells has written and illustrated more than 125 books for young readers.

What she offered our students was a philosophy. A talent, she reminded them, is a gift from God.

Drawing on "The Seven Steps of Writing Success", Ms. Wells walked our young writers through the quiet discipline behind every good story.

It was a lesson in craft, and equally a lesson in character. We are profoundly grateful to Ms. Wells for reminding our students that every book begins, quite simply, with a story, and that each of them has one worth telling.

Last week, our IB Visual Arts Grade 11 and Grade 12 students experienced firsthand why Marymount considers the city of Rome an extension of our classrooms.

The experience began with a Talk led by Mr. Donnelly, Head of Department for Visual Arts, who introduced students to MAXXI and MACRO, Rome’s celebrated contemporary art museums.

This preparation set the stage for an enrichment visit to MACRO, where students engaged directly with exhibitions by Miriam Cahn and Hito Steyerl.

They examined Cahn’s expressive use of paint and the physicality of her large scale charcoal works, and considered how Steyerl’s immersive video installation communicates complex global issues through moving image and exhibition design.

Students recorded their observations and reflections to bring back into the studio, considering how these approaches might inform their own developing artistic practice.

Experiences such as these are an essential part of the IB Visual Arts course, allowing students to research the practices of established artists and to make informed choices as they shape their own visual language.

Rome does not simply surround our School. It teaches alongside us.

Yesterday, Ms. Skerman, the Headmistress, had the pleasure of announcing the newly elected Elementary School Student Council Co-Presidents: Julian M. and Sana A.

On Wednesday, seventeen students delivered speeches before the entire Elementary School student body as part of the election process.

Julian shared his vision for the year ahead, including plans for a school newspaper. He closed with a promise to the student body: "I will help, I will lead, and I will include."

"I promise to bring kindness and respect" says Sama, centered on three simple, powerful commitments: that no one sits alone, respect for all, and having more fun.

During the assembly, Ms. Skerman offered these words to all the candidates:

"What you have just done took real courage"

"...you are all winners today. [...] That is how we grow: not by always winning, but by being brave enough to try."

Congratulations to Julian and Sama, and to all candidates who demonstrated remarkable courage and leadership.

At Marymount, the lunch bell does not signal a pause in learning; it signals the start of it.

Today, Middle and High School students created, launched, and ran their own Lunch Clubs, from sign up to ex*****on. From the Inventors Club shaping ideas into real solutions to the Finance and Global Markets Club exploring the world of investing, entrepreneurship is alive across our campus.

Add in robotics, astrophysics, mahjong, drama, photography, and even a mini basketball league, and the message becomes clear: our students are not simply filling free time. They are building skills, communities, and confidence, one lunch period at a time.

Our Seniors have returned to campus following two days retreat at Subiaco.

Through the lens of Abdulaziz S., a member of our Senior class, whose eye for the beauty of Subiaco offered a fitting testament to the retreat's spirit, we are guided to learn more about their experience.

Sacred to the memory of St. Benedict, Subiaco is a remarkable cluster of monasteries set within a forested valley above the town. It was here, at roughly the age our students are now, that the saint chose to leave behind his studies in Rome for a life of prayer within a hidden cave. That cave remains today, and it was the focus of the retreat's first day, offering students a humble yet profoundly significant space for reflection. Amid the quiet of the mountains, our Seniors considered their own calling in life, looking back on their journey at Marymount and beyond, and looking ahead to the paths they feel called to pursue.

"Amongst the gradual intensity of stress [of being a senior]," Says Abdulaziz "I found myself in awe of the fantastic natural formations of the Earth, and found peace in knowing my worries are but a speck in the grand design. There was an unusual and extraordinary sense of tranquility when in the presence of such monumental structures, and it was then that I understood why St. Benedict chose to reside in this natural palace."

The retreat also made room for prayer, with a visit to Vespers with the monks of Subiaco and chance to say the rosary before bed, and for reconnection with friends through a bracelet-weaving activity. On the second day, the group walked to St. Benedict's Pool, a serene setting in the valley where the waters of the Aniene River collect, fed by a striking waterfall.

A retreat of reflection, community, and quiet wonder, marking the beginning of the final academic year at Marymount for the Class of 2027 as they look toward the future.

Our Secondary School families joined us on 8 September, and our Elementary School families, from EC1 to Grade 5, followed on 9 September, for an evening dedicated to shared purpose.

Parents met and spoke directly with their children's teachers, and School's administrators learning more about this year's programs, curriculum, and expectations. Optional preview sessions on the First Communion Program and the Italian Program were also offered ahead of the main evening.

The Headmistress, Ms Paulina Skerman, opened the evening with a return to our founding mission and she spoke about pastoral care as a shared responsibility, the place of sport, music, and reading in a child's formation, and the school's focus areas for the year ahead. This morning, the entire Marymount community gathered for our first Whole School Mass in the gymnasium.

In his homily, Fr. Greg reflected on the Scripture readings, drawing out, with the help of our students, three steps to innovating our hearts and minds this year: 1) recognizing the value of creation in ourselves and one another,
2) upgrading our perspective through empathy and compassion, and
3) stretching our hearts and minds to embrace growth and new ideas.

As we begin this new chapter together, may we carry his closing words with us all year long: let us be innovators of kindness, community, and growth, so “That All May Have Life”.

From Secondary School to our Early Childhood Center, the first week back at Marymount was filled with experiences and activities for our students.

Our Grade 6, 7, and 8 students opened the year with three days of orientation.

Retreat Day took place at Fraterna Domus, beginning with Mass on campus and an opening prayer, followed by the Marymount Web icebreaker and the creation of an Identity and Celebration poster, marking this special 80th Anniversary year.

At Parco Avventura in Fregene, teamwork and trust took center stage as students faced new challenges together outdoors.

On their Day at Marymount, students embraced sports, took part in a session on the responsible use of technology, and came together for a shared BBQ lunch and a lively drama activity.

Fully immersed in their coursework from the very first days, our High School students also began the Global Online Academy program this year, giving them the chance to explore courses aligned with their personal passions.

Varsity tryouts are also underway, marking the start of a new season of school spirit and athletic competition.

Already immersed in the rhythm of the classroom, our Elementary students welcomed their newest classmates with a special snack, a shared moment to introduce themselves and get to know one another’s stories.

Our EC students began with just one hour a day, gradually building up toward a full day of school.

From the second week onward, each child’s transition continues at their own pace, as our EC Team partners with families to create an individual settling in plan tailored to their needs.

From Middle School orientation to the gentlest first steps in ECC, this week reflected what makes Marymount International School Rome a true community of learning and belonging.
