John Cabot University hosted a presentation for Professor Bogdan Popescu’s book Imperial Borderlands (Cambridge University Press, 2023) on June 10, 2024. The event, co-sponsored by the Department of Political Science and International Affairs and the MA in International Affairs, centered on the institutional legacies of the Ottoman and Habsburg Empires. In his book, Professor Popescu examines the role of extractive institutions in colonialism, arguing that the existing perspectives on their impacts are incomplete. He proposes a new framework focusing on investment, property rights, and violence, asserting that the most detrimental development outcomes arise from low state investment, significant alteration of local property rights, and high levels of coercion. The book draws on historical and modern data to explore Habsburg Military Colonialism in Central and Eastern Europe.
