What to do if you've got a low GPA? 🙈

Don’t panic! A low GPA score doesn’t mean that you can’t apply to universities abroad. There’s always a solution! ⬇️

⚖️Make up the difference in other parts of your application. Even if your GPA is low, it doesn’t mean that you can’t excel in your university studies. And the admissions committee usually understands that! If you can justify certain unsatisfactory grades in your motivation letter or provide recommendation letters proving that you’re a talented and dedicated student, this will help.

🌟Pass SAT/ACT with a stellar test score (if you’re required to take them, of course). Having passed one of the tests with a high score will prove that your low GPA is nothing but an unfortunate misunderstanding.

💃We’re sorry to say that, but… extracurricular activities. They still play a significant role in your application. Having them included in your application reflects a level of engagement both with your surrounding community and with your personal passions. And it’s always a huge plus!

Like this post and share with your friends if it was helpful 💜. We always try our best to give you the most useful information! 💪

Let’s keep exploring Icelandic education. If you want to study there - don’t forget to save this post! ✔️

⚫Undergraduate admission

In general, for bachelor level education, an applicant needs to have completed a high school examination/matriculation exam or equivalent. For international students it means that you’re required to have your higher secondary school certificate + 1 year of higher education studies!

You also need to pass language exams, such as TOEFL/IELTS/PTE etc. for studying in English, or entrance language test, if you want to study in Icelandic

For some subjects, however, there may be additional entry requirements and/or entrance exams set by the university. Typically, these are in subjects such as the medical sciences, economics, and law.

⚫Graduate admission

Students enrolling in graduate education should possess a good bachelor’s degree in a subject that corresponds closely to the graduate degree at the chosen Icelandic university. The minimum requirement is usually a 4-year Bachelor's degree!

As always, you’re also required to pass language tests (see examples above). Again, for some subjects there may be additional requirements, so we recommend double-checking this information on the university website.

Was this post useful? Do you plan to apply to Icelandic universities? 🤩💜

Your budget to live and study in Iceland ⬇️

🎓Tuition fees

Public universities in Iceland don’t charge tuition fees! There is only a ‘registration fee’, which is on average $500 per year. Private universities charge tuition fees, and the prices vary depending on the institution and specialization. For example, studying at the best university in Iceland, Reykjavík University, costs €5,100 - €7,300 per semester.

🏠Living expenses

The biggest expense is rent: you can expect to pay between $750 and $1,500 per month depending on the location (city center or outside city, and number of bedrooms). You can still find cheaper options and live with housemates, and then you can expect to pay $470+ per month.

☕Food and daily market items

You should count on spending ~$450 per month, depending on your lifestyle. If you want to eat out, then a meal in an inexpensive restaurant may cost ~$20.

🚎Transportation

Iceland has an excellent bus system with swift services around and between major towns and attractions. A monthly ticket for public transport costs around $85.

❗According to a current rough estimation, the living cost for a single student in Iceland is around $1,100 per month.

Iceland is a small country with only 7 universities located there, but the level of education in all of them meets all world standards! 🤩

Few facts about studying in Iceland:

👨‍🎓 Iceland has an undeservedly small percentage of international students: ~5-8%

🗣️ Despite this, there should be no problems with communication: almost everyone in Iceland speaks English well

🍃 The country is particularly renowned for its power engineering programs. Electricity in the country is almost entirely produced from renewable sources!

💰 You can study there FOR FREE! Public universities provide this opportunity to all students, even international ones. The main obstacle is that a large percentage of undergraduate programs are taught in Icelandic, but the number of English-language specialties is increasing from year to year

⚖️ Even if you choose to study at a private university, tuition fees will be 2-4 times lower than the tuition in countries such as the Netherlands, France, or the United Kingdom

❤️ The country has a high standard of living, as well as a low crime rate. In addition, Iceland is a global leader in gender equality. All these factors make studying and living in the country as comfortable as possible

❗ You should be prepared for the fact that in Iceland you need to renew your student visa every semester (!), proving that you are successfully coping with the study program. What a great motivation to study tho 😁
