K-6 classroom teacher inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach, encouraging independence, creativity and play!

Playful Matters is a unique home-based preschool started by Amie McIlroy. This home setting offers an individualized experience for your 3 to 5 year old to learn in a safe and loving environment by a teacher trained in Early Childhood Education with many years of classroom experience in the independent and public school system. Amie holds a certificate of Montessori Training for ages 2 – 6 and is

currently completing a one year Reggio Emilia training course. Many of the guidelines that form Playful Matters teaching philosophy are guided from Montessori and the Reggio Emilia approach to teaching and learning. We will do our best to incorporate these philosophies when possible. There will be a great balance between child centered/ play based learning, and direct teacher instruction and preparation for school.

Very cute Easter craft!

Got to start getting creative with what’s available at the supermarket and what’s left in my pantry. I used flour and oats to make these Blueberry Muffins. I also made a zucchini slice. Of course, these are only if you can get eggs! 5 eggs into the zucchini slice but rice flour to help give it structure and 2 eggs to make muffins. Lastly, I grabbed a loaf, buttered up all the slices, stuck ham and cheese in there. Repacked into the bag and stored in the freezer ready for toasties or sandwiches.
Basically that’s breakfast, lunch and snacks done for two days!
Let’s see what I can forage for tomorrow!

Having some St. Patrick’s Day fun in my Science classes today!

Join us with some Bicarbonate of Soda, green coloured vinegar and a plastic bag. We’re going to discover how many tablespoons it takes to explode the bag!

What is clear is that Loris Malaguzzi had a passion for a better world and he knew that a better world exists within the imagination of a child.
Azar Nafisi said “You need imagination in order to imagine a future that doesn’t exist”. The Reggio Emilia approach came out of a dark time in history by a man who knew what it was like to have your childhood stolen. It is this passion for the sacredness of childhood that I share. Let kids be kids, inspire their sense of wonder, let them figure things out or soar with their imagination and discover something new!

What inspired me in Reggio Emilia at the International Loris Malaguzzi Centre #1: Teacher as researcher. To actively look for more knowledge, in yourself as well as what the children are bringing to the process. Rediscovering what learning is. Rediscovering what teaching is.
Feeling passionate about your own practice. Being inspired by the children in the moment, being inspired by being present.

Playful Matters went walking today up Conic Hill in Scotland! Met lots of families along the way with young children so a very doable walk with a little bit of preparation.
