Earlier this week our students headed to the School of Transnational Governance at the European University Institute (EUI) for a day of learning, exploring, and looking beyond the classroom.

👉 From European politics to the challenges of disinformation and the narratives shaping our understanding of current events, it was a chance to see how issues that shape our society are discussed, researched and debated in academic and professional settings.

Celebrating a quarter-century of partnership, Monash University and the City of Prato are continuing their collaborative academic, research and civic engagement programs through a new five-year Memorandum of Understanding.

Signed by Mayor Matteo Biffoni and our Vice-Chancellor Professor Sharon Pickering during recent 25th-anniversary celebrations in Melbourne, the agreement strengthens joint work around areas including urban resilience, the circular economy, the green transition and community development.

The Mayor’s schedule of campus tours and meetings with senior Monash leaders and leading academics allowed deeper exploration of areas of shared interest between Monash and the City of Prato, and opened avenues of possibility for further research at our campus here in Prato.

A significant moment for both Monash and Prato, bringing our shared global community closer together as we look ahead to the future. Thank you for your visit!

🏳️‍🌈⚽ What does inclusion in sport really look like?

Join us at Monash Prato on 20 October for Making the Invisible Visible: LGBTQIA+ Inclusion in Sport across Italy and the EU.

We’ll discuss visibility, representation, belonging and inclusion in sport, bringing together academic perspectives and the lived experiences of members from the ASD Revolution team.

The event will also feature extracts from Il calciatore invisibile, a documentary about the origins of ASD Revolution, Florence’s first LGBTQIA+ football team.

With Matteo Bonotti (Monash University ), Karla Žeravčić (European University Institute) and members of ASD Revolution, moderated by Samuele Grassi.

New week, new class!

The European Union: Challenges, Crises and Opportunities unit is back this year at Monash Prato.
The unit explores the European Union as a unique political and historical project, from its role in transforming Europe from a zone of conflict into a zone of peace, to the challenges and crises shaping its future. Through interdisciplinary approaches drawing on science, law and economics, students will examine the origins of today’s EU, the forces driving it forward and those pulling it apart, and its relationship with Australia and the wider world.
🌍 We’re also pleased to continue our ongoing collaboration with the European University Institute (EUI), hosting an intern who will deliver a guest lecture on the EU and migration. As part of this collaboration, our students will also take part in a class with the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), focusing on disinformation, European democracy and related narratives, with an additional focus on the Russian war against Ukraine and related narratives, alongside EUI/School of Transnational Governance students.
⚽This year, the unit will also include a new visit to the Museo del Calcio, exploring the connections between the EU, sport and football, with guest speakers from Fiorentina and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna.

Who gets to feel safe, welcome, and truly at home in our public spaces?

That fundamental question was at the heart of our recent Ancora Imparo Monash Prato Dialogue, Inclusive Urban Spaces, held last Thursday as part of our 25th anniversary celebrations.
From street layouts and public transit to parks and piazzas, the design of our cities shapes how we live, move, and connect. Our community gathered to explore how research, architecture, and planning can join forces to build more equitable, accessible, and gender-sensitive environments across Italy, Europe, and Australia.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this event such a success: to the panelists for sharing their research, practice, and vision for civic belonging, and to the Monash Prato team for bringing this event to life.

This September, Monash Design students teamed up with the Politecnico di Milano (PoliMi) for a week of design exploration, exchange and discovery! ✨
Starting with studio sessions at Monash Prato,visits to Lottozero and the city’s creative and textile landscape, the collaboration continued with activities at Politecnico di Milano, Fondazione Prada, Triennale Milano and more. 🏛️
With five PoliMi students and lecturers Laura Galluzzo and Valentina Ferreri, the program brought together different perspectives and approaches to design, while giving students the chance to experience two very different sides of Italy’s design scene. 💡
And there’s more to come! 👀
Later this month, Monash Design will welcome Adela Glyn-Davies, Associate Professor from the University of Warwick, to kick off a new collaboration supporting the 2027 Design program through local sites, expertise and perspectives 🧵✨

Thank you for celebrating 25 years of Monash in Prato with us!

On 17 September, we opened the doors of Palazzo Vaj for a special Open Day celebrating 25 years of Monash in Prato and our long-standing connection with the local community.

It was wonderful to welcome students, alumni, colleagues, families, local residents, partners and friends to our campus, and to share a day of conversations, activities and opportunities to discover more about our work.

For 25 years, Monash Prato has been a place where people, ideas and cultures come together, connecting our students and researchers with Europe while building meaningful relationships with the Pratese community and our local partners.

Thank you for being part of our journey over the past 25 years. Here’s to the next chapter together!
