The Ghana Police Service has arrested Sibamay Zakaria, who was captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a detained pastor at the Police headquarters.

Zakaria was identified after footage of the incident circulated widely on social media, drawing public concern over how a civilian was able to physically attack a person who was in police custody.

The incident occurred after the pastor was arrested over allegations that he insulted Prophet Muhammad, a revered prophet in Islam.

In the video, the pastor is seen in handcuffs when a civilian approaches and allegedly slaps him. The footage triggered calls for the Police Service to establish how the assault happened and whether proper security procedures were followed.

In a statement, the Ghana Police Service confirmed Zakaria's arrest and said he is assisting with investigations.

The Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) has been tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the events that led to the alleged assault while the pastor was in custody.

The Police Service said, "all persons found culpable will be taken through the necessary disciplinary processes."

The statement did not name other individuals who may be investigated or provide further details about the circumstances under which the alleged assault took place.

The investigation is focused on the video footage that circulated online and purportedly showed Zakaria assaulting the detained pastor.

Police said Zakaria remains in custody and will subsequently be put before the court for the appropriate legal proceedings.

His arrest and detention do not amount to a finding of guilt. The allegations against him will be determined through due process and the judicial system.

A planned night of music and celebration ended in disappointment after ShattaFest UK was cancelled following a crowd crush outside the venue in London, prompting Shatta Wale's management to issue a heartfelt statement expressing sympathy for those affected.

The event, also known as Ghana Party in the Park, was called off on Saturday after police intervened at Copthall Playing Fields over safety concerns linked to severe overcrowding.

Reports from the scene indicated that the venue had exceeded its approved capacity, resulting in heavy congestion at one of the entrances. The situation escalated into a stampede that reportedly left several people injured.

A police officer at the venue informed attendees that the event had been cancelled because of public safety concerns after "quite a lot of people" were hurt.

Organisers first announced a temporary suspension before later confirming that the festival would not continue.

Reacting to the incident, Shatta Wale's management said cancelling the event was an extremely difficult decision but insisted that protecting lives had to come first.

"It is with a very heavy heart that we address the unfortunate events surrounding SHATTAFEST UK," the statement said.

"Following reports of a serious incident outside the venue, the difficult decision was made to cancel the event. Nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of every single person who came to celebrate music, unity, and love."

The management said it was devastated by reports that several people had been injured, as well as claims of fatalities, while stressing that it was awaiting official confirmation from the relevant authorities.

"Our hearts are with everyone who has been affected by this tragic situation. We are deeply saddened by the reports of injuries and the alleged loss of lives. While we await official confirmation from the relevant authorities regarding all the facts, our thoughts and prayers remain with the individuals involved, their families, their friends, and everyone impacted by this heartbreaking incident."

According to the statement, Shatta Wale's performances have always been centred on bringing people together, making the events surrounding the concert especially painful for the artiste and his team.

"Shatta Wale has always stood for the people. Every performance is built on bringing joy, hope, and unforgettable memories to the fans who have supported him throughout the years. To know that what was meant to be a night of celebration has become a moment of pain is truly devastating."

The management also appealed to the public and the media to avoid drawing conclusions while investigations remain underway.

"We respectfully ask the public and members of the media to avoid speculation while the appropriate authorities conduct their investigations. We trust that the truth will be established through the proper processes, and we encourage everyone to rely on verified information."

The statement further acknowledged the efforts of emergency responders, security personnel, medical teams, venue staff and everyone who assisted during the incident. It also thanked fans for their patience and understanding in the aftermath of the cancellation.

Shatta Wale and the Shatta Movement team, the management added, will cooperate fully with investigators and event organisers as authorities work to determine exactly what caused the crowd crush.

"This is not the outcome anyone wished for. Today, our focus is not on a concert—it is on the people whose lives have been affected."

ShattaFest UK has been called off after police ordered the event to close over serious safety concerns following an overcrowding incident that reportedly triggered a stampede.

The festival, which was expected to attract thousands of fans, was shut down after the venue exceeded its authorised capacity, according to UK police. Authorities stepped in after the situation escalated, citing public safety as the priority.

A police officer, speaking in a video circulated online, explained why the event could not continue.

"There's been a massive accident, a stampede which led to quite a lot of people getting hurt, and for that reason and for public safety it has to be shut down."

Following the intervention by police, organisers Ghana Party in the Park released a statement asking ticket holders and supporters to stay away from the venue while emergency responders dealt with the incident.

“Due to a major incident at the festival site, the event has been temporarily paused.

Please do not travel to or come to the festival site until further notice.”

The organisers said emergency services and the relevant authorities were working at the scene and appealed to the public to cooperate by avoiding the area.

“We kindly ask everyone to stay away from the area to allow them to carry out their work safely.

We will provide further updates as soon as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation.”

Despite describing the situation as a temporary pause in their statement, the event was ultimately cancelled after police deemed it unsafe for it to continue because of overcrowding.

ShattaFest had been billed as one of the major Ghanaian entertainment events in the United Kingdom, with dancehall star Shatta Wale scheduled to headline the programme. The festival was expected to draw fans from across the UK and other parts of Europe.

As of the latest update, organisers had not announced whether the festival would be rescheduled or whether ticket holders would be offered refunds.

Meanwhile, UK authorities have not officially confirmed the number of people injured or disclosed whether any arrests were made in connection with the incident.

The legal battle involving former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe Attionu is headed for another round after the Attorney General announced plans to challenge the Court of Appeal's decision that cleared her of all charges.

In a statement issued on July 30, 2026, the Attorney General confirmed that the Director of Public Prosecutions has been instructed to immediately lodge an appeal at the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the appellate court's ruling that acquitted and discharged the former MASLOC boss.

The appeal follows the Court of Appeal's unanimous decision earlier on Thursday to set aside Tamakloe Attionu's conviction on 78 charges, including conspiracy to steal, stealing, causing financial loss to the State, money laundering and breaches of the Public Procurement Act.

"Having received notice of the Court of Appeal's decision, the Attorney-General has directed the Director of Public Prosecutions to immediately file a notice of appeal to the Supreme Court, together with an application for a stay of ex*****on of the judgment pending the determination of the appeal," the statement read.

The Attorney General stressed that the state intends to pursue the matter to its conclusion and remains convinced that its legal position is sound.

"The Republic opposed the appeal by filing written submissions, contending that the appeal lacked merit and ought to be dismissed," the statement added.

"The Attorney-General remains committed to the due process of law and is confident that the appeal before the Supreme Court will succeed."

Earlier in the day, the Court of Appeal unanimously overturned the April 16, 2024 High Court judgment that convicted Tamakloe Attionu in absentia and sentenced her to 10 years' imprisonment with hard labour.

The three-member panel, made up of Justice Emmanuel Ankamah, Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe and Justice Samuel Obeng-Diawuo, concluded that the prosecution failed to establish its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The appellate court further held that the trial judge failed to properly apply the constitutional principle that every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Speaking to Class News after the ruling, Tamakloe Attionu's lawyer, Enoch Deegbe, said the Court of Appeal's decision largely turned on what the judges found to be a defective charge sheet.

According to him, the defence challenged the conviction on three principal grounds: the defective charge sheet, the absence of a proper prima facie determination against his client, and errors in the trial court's judgment. However, he said the appellate court anchored its decision mainly on the issue of the charge sheet.

Meanwhile, Daniel Axim, the former MASLOC operations manager and Tamakloe Attionu's co-accused, remains on bail after the Supreme Court granted him temporary freedom in January 2026 while awaiting the outcome of his own appeal.

Axim, who received a five-year prison sentence from the High Court, has already served nearly two years. With the Attorney General now moving to challenge Tamakloe Attionu's acquittal, attention is expected to shift to how the Supreme Court's eventual determination could influence Axim's pending appeal and the wider case.

The Court of Appeal has overturned the conviction and 10-year prison sentence imposed on former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, after finding that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The appellate court, in a judgment delivered on Thursday, acquitted and discharged Ms Tamakloe-Attionu, bringing an end to the conviction entered against her by the High Court.

The decision followed an appeal challenging both the substance of her conviction and the manner in which her trial and sentencing were conducted in her absence.

Her lawyers had maintained that the charges brought against her were fundamentally defective and that the prosecution had not presented sufficient evidence to establish the alleged offences to the required criminal standard.

Ms Tamakloe-Attionu had returned to Ghana from the United States on June 9, 2026, following her extradition. She was subsequently taken into custody and began serving the 10-year sentence at the Nsawam Medium Security Female Prison on June 24, 2026.

Her case dates back to 2021, when she travelled to the United States with permission from the High Court to undergo medical treatment while proceedings against her were still underway. She did not return to Ghana after leaving the country.

In 2024, the Accra High Court convicted her on several charges, including causing financial loss to the state and stealing, over allegations involving the misappropriation and diversion of public funds during her time as MASLOC chief executive.

The Court of Appeal, however, has now set aside those convictions, concluding that the prosecution did not meet the burden of proving the case beyond reasonable doubt.

The ruling means Ms Tamakloe-Attionu has been cleared of the convictions that resulted in her 10-year prison term.

The Supreme Court has struck down Ghana’s long-standing delegate-based system for internal political party elections, ruling that every registered party member in good standing must be given the opportunity to vote in the selection of party leaders and candidates.

In a 5-2 majority decision delivered on Wednesday, July 29, the apex court declared that limiting voting rights to a select group of delegates does not align with the democratic principles required under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

The landmark ruling opens the door for the adoption of a "one member, one vote" system in political party primaries, a move that could significantly reshape how presidential candidates, parliamentary candidates and party executives are elected in Ghana.

The judgement brings an end to a constitutional dispute that has sparked intense debate over whether ordinary members of political parties should have a direct role in deciding the future direction of their organisations.

The case was brought before the court by former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng; veteran politician Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe; and former Lands and Forestry Minister, Dr Christine Amoako-Nuamah.

They challenged the constitutionality of the delegate system used by major political parties, arguing that it denied the wider membership of their fundamental right to participate in internal party decision-making.

For several decades, Ghana’s major political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Convention People's Party (CPP), have relied on electoral colleges made up of selected delegates to choose presidential candidates, parliamentary candidates and national executives.

Under that system, only elected party officials, constituency representatives and accredited delegates were allowed to vote, while thousands of ordinary party members remained excluded from directly influencing key leadership decisions.

The plaintiffs argued that the arrangement created a divide between party members, giving a small group significant influence while denying other registered members who had met party requirements the same opportunity.

They maintained that political parties, which operate under Article 55 of the Constitution, are expected to uphold democratic values in their internal structures and decision-making processes.

The Attorney-General’s Department supported the legal challenge, urging the Supreme Court to embrace a "one member, one vote" model for political party elections.

The state argued that political parties are central institutions within Ghana’s democratic system and that their internal procedures must reflect constitutional principles such as equality, participation and universal suffrage.

According to the Attorney-General, widening participation in party elections would promote greater accountability, strengthen internal democracy and ensure that leadership choices reflect the will of the broader membership.

The plaintiffs had asked the court to declare the delegate systems contained in the constitutions of the NPP, NDC and CPP unconstitutional and to direct the parties to amend their rules to allow equal, direct and meaningful participation for all members in good standing.

They also sought an order requiring the Electoral Commission to ensure that political party constitutions comply with the democratic standards outlined in the Constitution and the Political Parties Act.
