Thanks to a specific Production Protocol, it is now one of the contemporary materials with the highest percentage of bio-based content. Il Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale nasce nel 1994 per volontà di un ristretto gruppo di conciatori toscani. Oggi sono oltre 20 le concerie consorziate, tutte operanti nell’area del distretto conciario toscano e accomunate dalla produzione di pellame conciato al vegetale. Questa parte di Toscana compresa fra le province di Firenze e Pisa rappresenta l’unico distretto italiano di produzione di pellame conciato al vegetale di alta qualità. Una lavorazione antichissima che, ora come allora, utilizza solo estratti di legno per il processo di concia. Una materia prima che richiede tempo e maestria artigiana per essere trasformata, un materiale di qualità che va personalizzandosi nel tempo. Stagionalmente il Consorzio presenta, in Italia e nelle maggiori capitali mondiali della moda, i trend e le nuove collezioni delle concerie associate, organizza conferenze stampa, mostre e seminari di approfondimento sul pellame conciato al vegetale. Attualmente presiede il Consorzio Leonardo Volpi.

The Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium was founded in 1994 by a small group of Tuscan tanners. Today there are 20 associated tanneries, all of them operating in Tuscany, in the area between Pisa and Florence, and sharing the same passion for vegetable-tanned leather and the same standards of production. The quality of Tuscan vegetable-tanned leather is the result of a long-lasting expertise and it’s closely connected to the lifestyle and culture of its production area. The Consortium acts as guarantor and ambassador of this Tuscan excellence throughout the world, an undertaking it has consolidated with the creation of the quality trademark “Pelle Conciata al Vegetale in Toscana” (Tuscan Vegetable Tanned Leather) and of the quality label guaranteeing quality and origin of leathers produced by its member tanneries. It proposes a wide range of different activities: sponsoring research; organising events and seminars or guided tours in tanneries for fashion schools; holding workshops for young designers, makers and producers; publishing informative materials on vegetable tanning.
